CU Men's Soccer Preview - at Rensselaer (10/29)

Saturday's game at Rensselaer is a must-win for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team's Liberty League playoff hopes, but the host team also needs at least a tie to guarantee a spot in the postseason when the Golden Knights take on the Engineers in Troy, NY this weekend.

The Series: Clarkson is 22-30-6 all-time against the Engineers, but the team has won only once in the last 16 meetings, a 2-1 overtime victory in 2017. The last four contests have seen two Clarkson defeats and two ties, with three of the four games going to overtime.

Key Stats for Clarkson (9-3-3, 2-3-3 Liberty League): The Golden Knights are in an odd spot where they are currently tied for seventh in the Liberty League but are ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer regional rankings along with fellow conference teams Vassar College and St. Lawrence University. The Green and Gold's offense has been stronger as late, with graduate student Bobby Guilfoil accounting for two goals and an assist in his past two games. Clarkson has nine shutouts in its 15 games, which ties them for 15th nationally in shutouts per game (0.600). The Knights' two-man goalkeeping team of Carter Kladstrup and Josh Morelli have also combined for the 16th-best figure in save percentage (.852) and 21st-best number in goals against average (0.60 GAA).

Key Stats for Rensselaer (5-6-5, 3-3-2 Liberty League): Grad student Paul Silva scored a goal in his third straight game on Wednesday and if there is one thing that the Golden Knights want to avoid on Saturday, it is being called for a penalty in the box. Silva's last six goals have come on penalty kicks and he is 7-for-7 on the season in that spot this year, helping mightily in his 9-1-19 scoring line. Kyle Osborne has scored more traditionally, accumulating 11 points on five goals and an assist. Those two have combined for 14 of the team's 18 goals scored in 2022. Luke Brezak and Colin Such have split time, with Brezak getting two more starts for a 1.00 goals against average and .727 save percentage, and Such putting up a 1.14 goals against average in seven contests.
