Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Solid Defensive Effort from Knights in 2-0 Loss to Fifth-Ranked William Smith

Potsdam, NY – Despite playing down one due to an early red card, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team showed well against fifth-ranked William Smith, as the Golden Knights dropped a 2-0 Liberty League decision to the Herons on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their mark evened at 5-5-2 overall and fell to 0-3-1 in conference contests while William Smith remained unbeaten in conference games at 4-0-1 while moving to 8-1-2 overall. Clarkson will play back-to-back games next weekend at Vassar College and Bard College.

Although William Smith was carrying play in the early going, the Herons didn't get much going on offense until Clarkson ended up playing down a player around the 17-minute mark. The Herons were able to get a quick break from their own defensive end as Ava Ruppersberger created space for a break away near the center line. Ruppersberger appeared to have a shot with a one-on-one with the Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio, but Emily Colby snagged Ruppersberger's jersey just before she got inside the penalty area, where she was sent off with a red card. On the ensuing free kick from a few yards outside the 18, Ruth Hotaling hit a shot to the corner, just outside the diving reach of DiCaprio at 17:02.

Clarkson had a solid scoring chance in the 30th minute when Sarah Kohls sent a hard kick to the left post, but Kirsten Wilson made a diving save and pushed the ball out of bounds to keep the game 1-0.

Playing 11-on-10 for the final 27 minutes of the first half and all 45 of the second half, Clarkson kept the Herons off the scoreboard until late in the second half. Near the midfield, Katrina Berg was able to collect a pass and create a three-on-two situation and played some give-and-go with Ruppersberger, making space and hitting a left-footed shot just behind the fingers of a diving DiCaprio near the top of the box, as the ball scooted in just inside the left post at 74:44.

William Smith finished with a 23-2 edge in shots, but the lead was down to 10-2 in shots on goal as many of the Herons attempts were high or well wide. DiCaprio finished with eight saves and Nelson ended up with two save for the shutout.
