Knights Win Seventh Straight in Four Sets Over RIT

Potsdam, NY – Following a rocky start, the Clarkson University Volleyball team won three straight sets and hit .308 over the final two games to claim a 3-1 victory (14-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-15) over RIT in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights, winners of seven straight, improved to 10-7 overall and 5-0 in the Liberty League, becoming the first team in the conference to claim a playoff spot in the six-team tournament at the conclusion of the regular-season. The Tigers saw their mark slip to 2-2 in league games and 7-14 overall. Clarkson takes to the road next weekend, facing Union College in another conference game on Saturday, and then playing a tri-match against Cortland State and Williams on Saturday.

RIT led for most of the first set, as the team was able to force Clarkson into some hitting errors with three blocks and watched five other balls sail out while hitting .393 in the first game themselves. However, Clarkson was able to correct itself in the second set, though the game started off in a bad way for the Knights. Clarkson trailed 11-6 in the early going, but cut the margin to one thanks to kills from Sara Galante, Kristin Werdine, and Allyson Treichel. A little later with the Tigers up by three (17-14), Clarkson went on a five-point run to take the lead after kills from Werdine and Julia Bennett. The Knights saw their advantage briefly evaporate with a tie at 21-21, but a solo block and kill from Sara Galante put the Knights back on top and the team closed out the second set with a narrow two-point win.

The third and fourth sets were solid wins for the Knights thanks to hitting percentages north of .250. In the third, Clarkson jumped out to a 4-1 led with two aces from Werdine and then pushed the margin to nine (14-5) as Emma Main dropped in two more aces. The gap fell to six briefly, but Clarkson finished with a 10-point margin (25-15). The fourth game again had Clarkson pick up the first five points with a pair of aces from Isabelle Crow, and though RIT made a strong comeback at the mid-point of the set (Clarkson 15, RIT 12), the Knights responded with a 7-1 run and repeated with another 10-point victory.

Werdine finished with 17 kills, 10 digs, and two aces to lead Clarkson on offense, while Allyson Treichel posted 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Sara Galante chipped in eight kills and three blocks, and Tess Sorel added six total blocks, which included two solo efforts and four block assists. Isabelle Crow posted 31 assists, 10 digs, and two aces, and Emma Baxter led the defense with 18 digs. Emma Main also chipped in nine digs and two aces.

For RIT, Liv Benard had four aces from the service line and led the team on offense with 19 kills against seven errors in 51 swings. Samantha Cox also reached double figures in kills with 12, and Sydney Neff had 41 assists. Defensively, Hailey Blixt and Jessica Klein recorded 16 and 15 digs, respectively, while Grace Phelan recorded six points on blocks thanks to one solo block and five assists.
