Knights Advance to Liberty League Semis On Penalty Kicks Versus Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – Penalty kicks were required for Tuesday afternoon's Liberty League First Round contest between the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team and Skidmore College, as the sixth-seeded Golden Knights advanced past third-seeded Skidmore after tying 2-2 in regulation.

The Golden Knights saw their record to go 9-5-4 overall and the Thoroughbreds moved to 10-2-4. Clarkson will now head to second-seeded Ithaca, taking on the Bombers on Friday afternoon.

In the penalty kick session, Clarkson trotted out Julia Tylar, Maddie Lopol, Angelina Fahrenkrug, Sarah Kohls, and Molly DiCaprio, as all five converted. Skidmore's first three shooters scored, but DiCaprio stopped Isabella Nevin, the Thoroughbreds' fourth shooter. DiCaprio then had the chance to finish off the contest, converting against her counterpart to send the Knights to the Liberty League Semifinals.

At the start of the game, Skidmore had the advantage for the first few minutes as the ball was held in Clarkson's defensive zone, but all the Thoroughbreds could muster in that time was a soft roller from outside that Molly DiCaprio easily picked up and a high shot that cleared the frame by a half dozen yards. Clarkson began to carry play and had five shots in a stretch of about eight minutes, including the game's first goal.

The Knights had the second of two corner kick chances in under a minute when Angelina Fahrenkrug sent a ball into the box. The ball briefly bounded outside, but was tipped back into the middle where four players fought for possession shoulder-to-shoulder at about 15-yards out. Chloe Hodge and a Skidmore defender had the most touches, but the ball scooted a few feet over to Maddie Lopol, and the junior hit the ball hard with her right foot before falling to the ground as Skidmore goalkeeper Claire Wolgast could only watch it sneak inside the post at 15:01.

About 10 minutes later, the Thoroughbreds had their best chance of the half to that point. Kat Dunn one-timed a volley from about 10 yards out, but DiCaprio stopped the hot shot with her hands, tapping it up to herself and snagging full possession for herself before a second shot could be taken off the rebound.

Clarkson got a key second goal late in the opening half. Chloe Hodge stole the ball near the midfield and quickly pushed a pass forward for Lillian Gillett. One more quick pass sent the ball wide to Arin Bates and Gillett filled the lane towards the goal. A cross into the box looked like it might get cleared, but it scooted through to Gillett, where she finished with a left foot from about six yards out at 37:30.

The Knights almost put the game away five minutes into the second half when Julia Tylar's free kick from about 30 yards out hit the crossbar, but the Thoroughbreds took advantage by instead getting a goal at the other end about two minutes later. A corner kick from the right side went over the top where it was settled at the other side of the penalty box. Then two more quick passes in the middle near the top of the six ended in a goal as Kat Dunn scored from Isabella Nevin at 52:33.

Two minutes later, Arin Bates nearly supplied Clarkson with its third goal on a long shot from the right side, by Wolgast leapt to deny the shot and smothered the rebound before any other Clarkson players could rush in for a tap-in.

Skidmore eventually tied the score late in the half. A long throw-in made its way to the perimeter of the penalty area and was headed forward. The ball was quickly settled by Emily Vinick, and she hit a hard shot into the upper left from about 15 yards out to tie the score 2-2 at the 76:30 mark.

The next 25 minutes were fairly quiet, as Skidmore got off a few more shots in regulation, and the only offense shown in the first overtime was a corner kick by the Knights. The second overtime saw a few shots, but none of them really challenged the goalkeepers as the game remained knotted at 2-2.

Clarkson finished with a 19-16 edge in shots, though Skidmore held the advantage in terms of shots on goal (10-7) and also held a modest lead in corner kick chances (5-4). DiCaprio stopped eight shots prior to the penalty kicks, while Wolgast made five saves during regulation and overtime.
