Dumont Tosses in Twenty as Knights Drop 64-54 Decision to SLU

Potsdam, NY – Cassidy Dumont poured in another 20-point game for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team, but her effort was not enough as St. Lawrence University used a balanced attack to thwart a late comeback attempt by the Golden Knights, 64-54, Wednesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-4 overall on the campaign and 0-3 in the Liberty League, while the Saints moved to 4-3 and 2-1. Clarkson will return to action on Friday evening when the team faces non-league foe St. John Fisher College.

The Knights started off slow, as St. Lawrence took an early 8-2 lead, capped by a pair of free throws from Cam Roberts near the midway point of the first quarter. Clarkson got things going enough to get within two, but St. Lawrence ended the quarter on another burst for a six-point advantage. The Saints continued to roll from the perimeter as Margaret Dougher hit a 3-pointer at 5:21 and then made another just 37 seconds later to put St. Lawrence up by 12. The Knights ended the run and drew within eight on three occasions, including late in the half to put the score at 28-20 at the break.

At the start of the third, the Knights got back within six, but another run of 3-pointers by the Saints changed the landscape of the game. Hannah Van Dyke hit a 3-pointer and her make was followed by long-range makes from Olivia Middleton and Abby Doin to extend the lead all the way to 19 at the 4:58 mark of the period. Clarkson continued to trail by a significant margin (60-40) in the fourth quarter before making a late charge to put some pressure on the Saints. Cassidy Dumont hit a 3-pointer and Mariah Benavides hit another to pull Clarkson within 14. The Knights continued to provide pressure on the Saints, forcing turnovers, but there wasn't enough time to get any closer than the final 10-point margin.

Sophomore Cassidy Dumont scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in the second half, shooting 9-for-22 from the floor overall. Senior Elaina Porter was just short of a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Bella Doyle chipped in 12 points and four boards.

For St. Lawrence, no player finished in double figures but Jackie Malley, Cam Roberts, and Margaret Dougher each scored eight points. Abby Doin and Olivia Middleton each scored seven, with Middleton also chipping in four assists.
