11-0 Run Sends Knights to Double-Digit Win Against Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY – Senior Sydney Roderick scored seven points with three goals and four assists while also causing three turnovers to help the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team take a 15-5 victory against Vassar College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record improve to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League, while Vassar fell to 3-6 and 1-3. Clarkson will be on the road again next weekend as the team faces Skidmore College and Union College in conference tilts.

Though Vassar scored the first goal of the game, the first half belonged to the Golden Knights. Sydney Roderick scored twice in the first quarter to put Clarkson on top and Mia Petrone added another goal late in the period to give the Knights a 3-1 advantage, but the game was blown open in the second quarter. Chrissy Benedict bookended the quarter with the first goal and the last goal of the frame for the Knights as the team rolled off five more goals to build an 8-1 lead at the half.

The third quarter was more of the same for the Knights as Julia Lavarnway, Lauren Meyers, and Mia Petrone each found the back of the net for an 11-1 lead. It wasn't until late in the quarter that Vassar's Emma Torkelson ended the home team's scoreless drought, but the Knights still scored the last goal of the period for a 12-2 lead through three quarters. Madelynn Barnum, Hailey Millington, and Roderick each scored in the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter to push the margin to 15-2, but Vassar scored three late for the final tally.

Roderick had seven points, three caused turnovers, and three groundballs to lead the Golden Knights. Mia Petrone snagged seven draw controls and also added four points with three goals and an assist. Julia Lavarnway notched a goal and two assists for three points, and Madelynn Barnum added three goals and four draws. Defensively, McKenzie Tikalsky also caused two turnovers and added two groundballs. Sydney Christiansen stopped 11 shots and allowed only two goals before being relieved by Laura Wing in the Clarkson crease.

Emma Torkelson led Vassar with three points with a goal and two assists. Three Vassar goalkeepers combined for nine saves.

Clarkson led in the major categories, outshooting Vassar 32-21 (24-16 shots on goal), picking up 17 groundballs to Vassar's 14, and winning the battle of draw controls 14-9.
