Zoeller Sets Strikeout Mark as Knights Split with Middlebury

Potsdam, NY – Senior Olivia Zoeller scored the go-ahead run in the fifth and also tossed a complete game as the Clarkson University Softball team split its non-league doubleheader against Middlebury College on Saturday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights dropped the first game 8-0 and then recovered to win the second contest 3-1 to move to 15-17 on the season. Middlebury edged forward to 17-9 on the year. Clarkson is scheduled to face St. John Fisher College on Monday afternoon at Scott Field.

In the opener, Middlebury scored two in the first, one in the fifth, one in the sixth, and then four in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Abby Santis's single allowed Noelle Ruschil to score from first after a bobble in the outfield and Megan Fox followed with an RBI single to put the Panthers up 2-0 early. A solo home run from Ruschil in the fifth put the score at 3-0 and a Jen McGann sacrifice fly in the sixth made in 4-0. In the seventh, extra chances allowed Middlebury to score four, as Tori Papaleo delivered an RBI double, Jordyn Johnson singled in a run, and Ruschil hit a two-run homer for an 8-0 lead.

Jewel Ashbrook struck out nine and allowed only three hits over seven frames to pick up the win for the Panthers while Ruschil was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three more driven in. Riley Page had two of Clarkson's three hits in the contest.

Game two was a pitchers' duel in the early going as Olivia Zoeller and Samantha Hausman exchanged light offensive innings. Clarkson did score in the bottom of the first as Zoeller led off with a single and then stole second, allowing Sarah Vaccaro's single to right to score her from second. A sacrifice fly from Ruschil in the third tied the game at 1-1.

In the fifth, Clarkson put together a two-out rally and scored two key runs. Zoeller drew a two-out walk and moved to second when Sam Short reached on an error. Vaccaro then singled in Zoeller with a hard shot up the middle, and Kayla Robert followed with a hit in nearly the same spot to plate Short. Middlebury had a chance in the top of the sixth to possibly tie the game when back-to-back singles and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs, but Zoeller induced a pop up to second, struck out the next hitter, and then got a fly ball out from the last hitter to escape the jam.

Zoeller finished with 10 strikeouts against two walks and seven hits over seven innings of work, becoming Clarkson's all-time leader in strikeouts in the process (461). Kayla Robert, Sarah Vaccaro, and Maddie Brink each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Knights. Jordyn Johnson led Middlebury with a 3-for-4 effort.
