Clarkson Comes Up Short in Slugfest with Rochester, 18-10

Rochester, NY – Two of the better scoring offenses in the region lit up the scoreboard on Saturday afternoon, but the Clarkson University Baseball team could not keep pace with University of Rochester, as the Yellowjackets downed the Golden Knights 18-10 in a single Liberty League contest.

Clarkson saw its record fall to 5-11 overall and 2-4 in conference games, while Rochester moved to 17-4 and 6-0. The two teams will lock up for a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

Rochester opened the scoring with back-to-back homers in the first as Joseph Rende and Jacob Matzat each cleared the wall. The Knights responded with one in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Mike Nee ground out. However, the Yellowjackets opened things up in the second as Matzat delivered a three-run double, and two more scored when Harper Sy tripled. In the third, Rochester added six more, including a two-run homer by Matzat.

Down 11-1 before its third at bat, the Knights started to chip away, scoring three in the bottom half of the frame. Kent Wilson scored on a wild pitch, Mike Nee sent another in on a ground out, and Joe Pagano hit a ball over the center field wall for a solo home run. In the bottom of the fourth, Colby Brouillette homered in two with a bomb to left, but Rochester countered with single runs in the fifth and sixth before adding two more in the seventh. Clarkson came back with four in the bottom of the seventh as Kent Wilson tripled with the bases loaded and then came home on a ground out by Brouillette. The final two innings, surprisingly, went without any runs scored.

Wilson was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three more driven in for the Knights, while Brouillette also was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Pagano went 3-for-3 with his solo home run, and Nee drove in a pair.

For Rochester, Jacob Matzat drove in nine and scored four times, going 5-for-6. Harper Sy, Jackson Reed, Josh Leadem, and John Moses each had three hits, and Matt Cappelletti was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two more runs scored.
