Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knights Fall at Union, 18-8

Schenectady, NY – For the second straight day the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team found itself in a first-quarter hole, but this time the Golden Knights were unable to crawl back from the early deficit, falling to Union College 18-8 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their conference mark evened at 3-3 while moving to 8-3 overall, and Union pushed its mark to 3-6 and 2-3. Clarkson looks to get back on track next weekend when it hosts University of Rochester.

Although the Knights were tied in the first five minutes of the game, 1-1, Union scored six times in a stretch of less than six minutes to make the score 7-1 through just 11 minutes. Clarkson fell behind by as many as eight late in the second quarter, but appeared to have corrected things late when both Julia Lavarnway and Sydney Roderick scored in the final minute to put the score at 11-5 at the half.

What looked like a shift in momentum proved false, as Union again put together a strong scoring run in the third quarter. Midway through the period, with the gap still at six goals, Grace Heiting scored to launch another run as the Dutchwomen tallied six times in less than six minutes to put the lead at 11 for the home team. The fourth quarter was relatively quiet, as the Knights were unable to put together a comeback run.

Union finished with a 30-23 edge in shots (27-17 shots on goal) and the two teams were tied in groundballs (18-18) and separated by just one draw (15-14, in favor of Union).

Sydney Roderick led Clarkson with three goals and also added in two groundballs. Mia Petrone produced a goal, five draws, three caused turnovers, and two groundballs, and Madelynn Barnum added a goal and seven draw controls. Sydney Christiansen had four groundballs and made five saves in 38-plus minutes in the Clarkson crease, and Laura Wing stopped four shots in 21-plus minutes of work.

For Union, Grace Heiting tallied nine points on seven goals and two assists, but that was just the beginning of her impressive all-around effort, as she also added 10 draws, four groundballs, and caused seven turnovers. Katie Julien had four points with three goals and an assist and Anna Smith chipped in four scores. Dana Truini also had four groundballs and caused three turnovers. Hannah Dubinsky made nine saves for the Dutchwomen.
