Knights Fall for First Time in 2022, 2-1 to Oswego State

Oswego, NY – Two goals in the final five minutes of the first half proved to be the difference, as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team suffered its first loss of 2022, falling 2-1 to Oswego State on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-1-1 on the season, while the Lakers saw their record improve to 4-2-1. Clarkson will begin Liberty League play next Wednesday when the team travels to Skidmore College.

The first half of Saturday's contest was relatively quiet, as the handful of scoring opportunities either went wide or were cleared by the Lakers' defense. The best chance came with about 10 minutes to go, when Angelina Fahrenkrug took a hard shot from outside the box that went just wide of the left post. On the other side of the field, Oswego's main chances were cleared before a shot could be taken, as Molly DiCaprio would leave her spot near the goal and end the offensive push before it could develop.

Late in the half, however, Oswego scored on somewhat of a broken play, as the pass from the corner missed its mark in front at the six, but made its way to the foot of Jackie Marquardt near about 12 yards out on the other side of the box, and she was able to chip her shot into the right corner for a 1-0 Oswego lead at 40:21.

The Lakers tacked on another goal just a few moments later, seemingly out of nowhere. Marquardt gained control of a loose ball near her own third in the Oswego defensive end and sent a pass over midfield to Sara Marinaro. She was able to split Clarkson's defenders and outrun three players in pursuit, maneuvering around DiCaprio at the last moment to chip in Oswego's second goal at 42:10.

At the break, Clarkson was outshooting Oswego 6-2, but the Lakers made the most of their two chances while none of the Golden Knights' shots were on the frame in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Knights continued to hold the advantage in shots, but it took some time for the team to finally break through, finally coming at the midpoint of the half. After a foul was committed on the sideline, Julia Tylar took the free kick from roughly 35 yards out, sending the ball into the box. Oswego goalkeeper Perri Anderson punched the ball away, but it went almost straight down to the foot of Sarah Kohls, who was able to hit a medium-paced groundball in from roughly eight-yards out to put the Knights on the scoreboard at 67:26.

Clarkson sought the equalizer in the final moments and had a few chances. With less than seven minutes to go, Chloe Hodge's shot from roughly 10 yards out went high over the crossbar, and around the 4:20 mark, a corner kick opportunity was cleared away without a legitimate shot on goal attempt. A minute later, Julia Tylar took a free kick from almost the identical spot of the start of Clarkson's last goal, but the ball into the box was cleared away harmlessly. The ball also spent much of the final two minutes in the Oswego defensive end, but Clarkson was unable to get any shots off in that time.

The Knights finished with an 18-7 edge in shots, but just a 5-4 lead in shots on goal, while also holding a 3-2 advantage in corners. Molly DiCaprio finished with two saves for the Knights, while Anderson stopped four shots for the Lakers.
