Long-Range Shots Give Ithaca 2-0 Win Over Clarkson

Potsdam, NY - Two shots from outside the penalty area proved accurate enough to put the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team on the downside of a 2-0 decision to Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 5-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in Liberty League play, while Ithaca moved to 5-1-2 and 1-0-0. Clarkson will be at RIT next weekend as the team looks up to pick up its first win in conference play.

Clarkson controlled the early play, outshooting Ithaca 4-1 in the first 25 minutes, including a shot on goal in the first 15 seconds on goal by Sarah Kohls. Ithaca began to get a few more chances in the Clarkson defensive end down the stretch in the first half, and taking advantage of a miscue by the Knights. The Green and Gold were whistled for a handball just outside the penalty area, giving Ithaca a direct kick from roughly 22 yards out. Two Ithaca players took turns at fakes at the top of the box, with Rosie Bostian finally being the one to put a shot on the goal, with it just sneaking under the crossbar in the final minute of the half to put the Bombers up 1-0.

In the second half, Clarkson nearly tied the game when a header from Maddie Lopol hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced out in the 49th minute. The score certainly could have changed the outlook of the contest, as a goal 25 minutes later proved too much to overcome. The Bombers picked up possession near the top of the Clarkson defensive zone as Ava Detorie had a one-on-one with a defender from the Knights. Eventually, more Ithaca players came into the picture and Detorie sent a pass to the other side of the field for Kaelyn Fernandez, who took a touch or two and drilled a high shot into the right corner from about 20 yards out at 72:26.

Ithaca finished with a 7-6 lead in shots and had a small advantage in corner kicks at 5-3. Grace Hickey made three stops for the Bombers to earn the shutout, while Molly DiCaprio made one save for the Knights.
