Late Free Throws Lift Knights to Comeback Win Versus Vassar

Potsdam, NY – Down by 18 in the third quarter, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team mounted an incredible comeback over the final period and a half to rally for an 83-81 win over Vassar College on Friday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-5 on the season and moved to 1-3 in Liberty League games, while Vassar fell to 5-6 and 2-2.

Clarkson tied the game at 74-74 on a 3-pointer from Raelin Burns with 3:20 to go, and took its first lead of the game on a jumper by Cassidy Dumont with a little over a minute to go. However, the game was tied and each team had a chance for the game-winner in the final 10 seconds, but the contest turned when Burns picked up a loose ball with under two seconds to go and was fouled. She made both free throws at the other end, and a desperation 3-pointer by Vassar came up short as Clarkson escaped with the win.

Things did not start off well for the Knights, as the team was down 13-2 in the first four minutes of the contest. Though stunned at the beginning, Clarkson rallied to shoot 7-for-14 in the quarter and trailed by 13 through the first 10 minutes, with Vassar going 12-for-20 in the opening quarter. The two teams played roughly even in the second quarter, but the Brewers clearly had the advantage on the glass, out rebounding Clarkson 26-9 overall in the half, including 10 offense rebounds. What kept the Knights close were 11 turnovers by the Brewers.

In the third, the lead stretched to as many as 18 when Sierra McDermed made a shot with 3:17 to go, but Clarkson went on an 11-2 run to the end the quarter to draw within nine. The fourth did not change the momentum, as the Knights continued to chip away. Three-point field goals from Cassidy Dumont, Mariah Benavides, and Raelin Burns drew the Knights within one (70-69) and Clarkson tied the score with a little over three minutes to go. When the Green and Gold took the lead with 1:16 to go, the team would never trail again, though the game was tied until the final free throws broke the deadlock.

Cassidy Dumont finished with 24 points, shooting 10-for-20 from the floor, while also adding six assists. Eliana Porter chipped in a career-high 21 points and seven rebounds, making 7 of her 8 attempts from the free throw line, while Mariah Benavides produced 14 points and Raelin Burns tossed in 11 for the Knights.

For Vassar, Caroline Siekman was tough in the post, scoring 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting, and Bella Tawney contributed 15 points and eight rebounds, going 6-for-11 from the floor.

Clarkson shot 16-for-20 from the free throw line and had a season-high 11 3-pointers. Both teams shot well overall, with Vassar shooting 48.5% and the Knights at 48.3%.
