Brockport Comes From Behind for Five Set Win Over Golden Knights

Potsdam, NY – Each of the five sets between Brockport and the Clarkson University Volleyball team were decided by three points or fewer as the two teams battled Saturday morning and early afternoon, but the Golden Knights came up short in the match, falling 22-25, 25-27, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13 at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved to 12-8 overall and Brockport edged to 10-11. Clarkson heads to Ithaca next Friday, a showdown for hosting rights for the Liberty League Semifinals and Finals set for the second weekend of November.

The first set between Brockport and Clarkson saw 11 ties and modest leads for each team. The Golden Eagles had a three-point advantage late (20-17) only to see the set tied at 20 following a kill from Tess Sorel and two attack errors by the visitors. Clarkson tied the set again at 21 after a kill from Sara Galante, but two more attack errors allowed the Knights to push the margin further. Olivia Freer and Julia Bennett each notched kills for a 25-22 win.

In the second, Clarkson had a quick lead (5-2), only to see Brockport score eight of the next nine. The Golden Eagles slowly pushed their lead to as many as six and appeared ready to tie the match at one set apiece. However, with the score 22-16, Clarkson scored four straight to get back into it, including a solo block and kill from Julia Bennett. Still down by three a few points later (24-21), Clarkson took advantage of some Brockport errors and rallied for a set point of their own (25-24). After the set was tied again at 25, Marin Hangliter delivered a kill and another error put the Knights up by two sets.

Brockport built what looked like an insurmountable advantage in the third, pushing its early lead to 17-8. That margin would extend to 11 (20-9) before Clarkson began its comeback. Once at 24, Brockport had six set points denied by the Knights with two kills from Sara Galante and kills from Sorel and Freer putting the Knights within one (24-23). However, Alexis Sison put the ball down for the 25th point to help the Golden Eagles avoid the sweep.

The Golden Eagles more than avoided the sweep, battling back from a five-point deficit (18-13) midway through the fourth set, rallying all the way for a 25-22 victory. In the fifth game, the Golden Eagles built a 9-5 advantage before Clarkson started coming back, eventually tying things up at 13 on a kill from Bennett and an attack error on the Brockport side. The Golden Eagles would not allow the Knights another rally, though, as Loomis delivered a kill and Brooklyn Sullivan ended the set and match with an ace.

Julia Bennett hit .500 in the match (15-1-28) and also added six blocks, including two solo efforts. Sara Galante had 12 kills and 17 digs, and Tess Sorel added 12 kills and three block assists. Isabelle Crow scored 30 assists and Anna Mayer chipped in 23 assists. Abigail Spector also produced 35 digs and Olivia Freer had four block assists.

For Brockport, Jordan Thompson recovered from a third-set injury to finish off the match with 20 kills, 12 digs, and seven aces. Megan Loomis added 14 kills and Alexis Sison came on late with 13 kills. Kaitlyn Jewett was busy with 58 assists and Elsie Logan notched 27 digs.
