Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second Half Goal Lifts RPI Past Clarkson, 2-1

Potsdam, NY – Despite controlling play for most of the game, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer ended up on the short side of a 2-1 decision against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, as the Golden Knights fell in the opening round of the Liberty League Playoffs on Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 11-5-2 overall, while the Engineers improved to 9-4-4. RPI advances to face William Smith College on Friday.

The first few minutes of the game were relatively quiet in terms of offense, but it didn't take long for RPI to get on the scoreboard. Off a throw-in from Hannah Krieg, the RPI offense was able to get things rolling in the Clarkson end. What looked like a harmless pop up pass near the six-foot line, ended up being a broken play. An RPI player may have tipped the ball past Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio as she came out to kick the ball away, but it was Izzy O'Clair who made sure that the ball made it past the goal line by tapping the ball over the line at 15:18.

Clarkson had to wait just a few minutes before finding the equalizer as the Golden Knights continued to put pressure on the Engineers' defense. Off a goal kick from RPI keeper Megan Wampner, junior forward Chloe Hodge immediately won the ball in the midfield, took a couple of touches into the open on the right side of the penalty box. With space just outside the area, Hodge took a hard shot to the opposite post and the ball was beyond the outstretched reach of Wampner, tying the game at 1-1 at 22:34.

Beyond the goals, each team had some decent chances, with Gwen Barnes coming closest on a hard shot that just missed the upper right post in the 30th minute.

Clarkson finished the first half leading in shots (6-4), shots on goal (3-2), and corner kicks (4-1).

At the start of the second half, Arin Bates had a decent attempt from the right wing, but it was easily picked up by Wampner, and both teams had soft shots that were collected by their respective goalies. However, in the 63rd minute the Engineers picked up their second goal. Off a free kick near midfield, the ball came into the penalty area, where a collision between Veronica Martinez de Pinollos and Molly DiCaprio took both players out. From there, Brooke Miller was able to pick up the loose ball near the end line and chipped a shot over the heads of the Clarkson defense, unable to grab the ball with their hands, for an unassisted goal at 62:12.

Clarkson had a pair of decent chances off free kicks down the stretch. Just short of the 70th minute, Chloe Hodge took a shot from about 30 yards out in the center of the midfield, but the attempt was snagged by Wampner. With less than two minutes to go, Julia Tylar had a shot from outside the box on the left side, again off a direct kick. Wampner stopped the attempt, and the ball was briefly loose, but the RPI goalkeeper was able to roll back over it before a Clarkson player could tap in the rebound.

Clarkson finished with a 21-7 edge in shots overall, a 12-5 lead in shots on goal, and an 8-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Molly DiCaprio stopped three shots for the Knights and Wampner denied nine shots for the Engineers.
