Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Knights Fall in Straight Sets to William Smith in Liberty League Semis

Ithaca, NY – Each of the three sets of Friday's Liberty League Semifinal match were close, but the Clarkson University Volleyball team found itself on the short end of each of those games as the Golden Knights dropped a three-setter to William Smith, 27-25, 25-20, 25-21.

The Golden Knights saw their season end at 14-12 overall, while William Smith improved to 15-9, advancing to the Liberty League Championship match against Ithaca College on Saturday.

Clarkson got off to a strong start in the first game, rolling out to an 8-2 advantage in the first 10 points. William Smith regained its footing and split the next six points, but really got things going by pulling to within one just a few moments later (12-11). Clarkson would not relinquish the lead for a bit, only seeing the Herons briefly tie the set at 16. The Knights responded with the next three points thanks to a kill and an ace from Sara Galante, forcing the Herons to take a timeout. The break worked, as the Herons tied the set at 19, but again Clarkson still held the lead late when Marin Hangliter delivered a kill to put the tally at 23-22. The Knights ran out of steam there, though William Smith needed extra points to pick up the win, as Marin Montagne recorded a block and Elaina Wamhoff ended the game with a kill.

It appeared as if the second set would be similar to the first as the two teams were tied six times before either hit 10 points, but William Smith scored four of five points to gain a 13-10 advantage after an Elaina Wamhoff kill. With the set tied at 15 just a few points later, the Herons scored five of six for a 20-16 lead, ending the small run with an ace. Clarkson recovered to get back within one, forcing the Herons to take a timeout, but an attack error and three kills, the final one coming from Malya Sayre, ended the set.

Clarkson spent most of the third set trying to get out of an early hole. The Knights trailed by seven in the first 15 points (11-4) thanks to back-to-back aces from Kenyce Johnson, and fell behind by as many as nine (14-5). Still trailing by eight late (20-12), Clarkson started to chip away at the deficit, but time was not on the Knights' side as the gap was too much to overcome.

Sara Galante recorded 10 kills and 11 digs for the Knights, while Olivia Freer also had 10 kills and a .318 hitting percentage. Anna Mayer produced 19 assists and Abigail Spector picked up 14 digs.

For William Smith, Elaina Wamhoff ran the offense with 35 assists and also contributed 12 digs and six kills in just six attempts. Malya Sayre had 15 kills and Maysie Malinaric produced 17 digs.
