Knights Close Out Regular Season with Split at Alumni Gym

Potsdam, NY – Saturday's regular-season finale saw the Clarkson University Volleyball team split against a pair of non-conference foes, as the Golden Knights dropped a four-set match to Cortland (19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-8) but recovered to own Nazareth in three (25-17, 25-20, 25-10).

The Golden Knights moved to 13-11 overall and face RIT in the Liberty League First Round on Tuesday at Alumni Gymnasium. Cortland saw its record improve to 23-3, while Nazareth dropped both and fell to 9-17.

In each of the sets, Cortland jumped out to early leads, but most of the time the Knights were able to rally early on. In the first, Cortland picked up seven of the first nine points, but after Clarkson closed within four, the Knights went on a 6-0 run, as the Green and Gold capitalized on some unforced errors on the other side of the net. A few points later, Ashley Currier's kills gave the Knights a five-point advantage (19-14). Although Cortland would rally to within two, the Knights returned the advantage to five shortly thereafter, and a pair of errors by the Red Dragons put the final tally at 25-19 for the home squad.

Set two saw Cortland start off with four of the first five points, but the Knights rallied to back within one over the course of the next 10 tallies. The two teams then exchanged small runs, as a block from Alexa Guedez gave the Dragons a five-point margin, but the Knights responded with a run of their own, capped by an Olivia Freer kills, returning the gap to just one. Down the stretch, though, Cortland picked up points when it needed as an ace and kill from Allie Sturgess finished off the stretch for the Red Dragons.

Like the second set, the third started with a 4-1 lead for the Red Dragons, but the Knights came back to tie the set three times (7-7, 8-8, and 13-13). After the third tie, the Dragons put up five straight, finished off by a kill from Sturgess. Clarkson would close the gap briefly, but Cortland maintained at least a three-point lead for the rest of the game.

The fourth set was all Cortland, as the Red Dragons hit well over .500 (18-1-29) as a team while limiting the Knights to just four kills against five errors.

Both Sara Galante and Marin Hangliter posted eight kills, with Galante adding in 16 digs and two aces and Hangliter producing 11 digs and three aces. Abigail Spector also had three aces to go along with her 24 digs, while Isabelle Crow had matching assists and digs totals with 16. Anna Mayer also contributed 13 assists and Julia Bennett had four block assists.

For Cortland, Alexa Guedez hit .435 (13-3-23) with nine total blocks, five solo and four assists. Giovanna Rossi and Sturgess posted eight kills. Mikenzie Martens notched 27 digs, Anna Pilkey produced 20 digs, Ryan Hinshaw had 27 assists, and Samantha Rodriguez tossed in 18 assists.

Against Nazareth, the Knights were able to limit their opponent's offense and did just enough on their own to carry the day. The opening set saw Clarkson jump out to a quick lead with seven of the first eight points, mostly with a diverse offensive set. The Golden Flyers fought back to within four on a couple of occasions, but the Knights kept the opposition at a safe distance. Down the stretch, Clarkson scored five of the last six points, capitalizing on errors by Naz and kills from Anna Mayer and Marin Hangliter.

Set two was a closer affair, though Clarkson did edge out in the early going once again. The Golden Flyers wouldn't let the set get away from them, though, pulling back within one on a few occasions, including as late as 18-17. That was the last chance for the Golden Flyers to get even, though, with a pair of kills from Natalie Peacock returning the lead to a more comfortable margin, and the set getting closed out on a kill from Ashley Currier.

The third was all Clarkson, with the Knights picking up 14 of the first 16 points and putting the Flyers away early. Clarkson pushed the advantage to 14 (19-5) and despite a handful of points here and there for Naz, the Knights would never allow the set to get close.

Clarkson's second match didn't see many substitutions as the senior got a chance to go out on a winning note. Galante had 14 kills and 12 digs, Abigail Spector had 15 digs, and Marin Hangliter added 14 digs. Anna Myer posted five kills on five attempts and also ran the offense with 13 assists, while Isabelle Crow pitched in 16 assists and two aces. Julia Bennett and Olivia Freer were dominant at the net with seven and five blocks, respectively.

Nazareth's Tessa Grover was busy with 10 kills, seven assists, and nine digs, but the remainder of the Golden Flyers' offense was limited to just 12 kills as the team hit only .009 in the match. Ella Kules produced nine assists, Rylee Loomis had three aces, and Zoe Tylipakis had 13 digs.
