Knights Come Up Short at SLU, 73-61

Canton, NY – Junior Cassidy Dumont scored a season-high 21 points and also added in six steals over her 39 minutes, but the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team came up short against St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, as the Golden Knights fell 73-61 in Liberty League action at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights closed out the first semester at 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference games, while St. Lawrence moved to 2-5 and 2-1. Clarkson will next play in Florida just before the New Year, taking on Kalamazoo and Amherst. |

Both teams got off to slow starts in the first quarter with St. Lawrence picking up its first points on free throws but neither team making a basket for the first two-plus minutes of the contest. Cassidy Dumont had a layup-and-one at the 4:35 mark to put the score at 11-7, but the Saints ended the period on an 8-0 run, started by a 3-pointer-and-one from Margaret Dougher.

St. Lawrence scored the first nine points of the second quarter for a 17-0 run in a stretch of seven minutes to put the tally at 28-7, but the Knights got going with back-to-back 3-pointers from Raelin Burns and Veronica Tache. Although the margin went back to 20 points on two occasions, Clarkson ended the half on a 7-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer in the final seconds from Raelin Burns.

A 3-pointer from Cassidy Dumont at the start of the third quarter pulled the Knights back to within 10, but the Saints responded with an 8-0 run to put the gap at a more comfortable distance for the home team. Each time the Knights responded with a run to put pressure on St. Lawrence, the Saints had an answer. The Knights put together a solid run early in the fourth quarter thanks to a three-point play from Bella Doyle and a 3-pointer from Addie Kea, cutting the deficit to 10 with just under six minutes to play. Clarkson went through a scoreless drought in the next few minutes but had back-to-back 3-pointers from Cassidy Dumont to drop the margin to single digits with a minute to go, causing the Saints to take a timeout in an attempt to stop the momentum. Forced to foul late, the Knights came up empty in their final push for the comeback.

Dumont scored 21 points thanks to 4-for-10 shooting from the 3-point line, while Raelin Burns added 14 points. Addie Kea also had nine points and Bella Doyle recorded eight points for Clarkson. For St. Lawrence, Elizabeth Flynn was a rebound short of a double-double with 12 points nine rebounds. Cam Roberts was also just shy of a double-double, putting up nine points and eight rebounds. St. Lawrence enjoyed a 49-26 edge on the glass, and scored 23 second-chance points thanks to 19 offensive rebounds.
