Knights Pull Away Late in Season-Opening 16-7 Win Over Brockport

Potsdam, NY – A strong start and an equally strong finish allowed the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team to come away with a 16-7 win over Brockport in its season-opener on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights open the year at 1-0 and look to remain unbeaten when the team takes on Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon. Brockport fell to 0-2.

Clarkson scored the first five goals of the game before Brockport answered 20 minutes in, as the Knights held at least a two-goal advantage from the midway point of the opening quarter until the conclusion of the game. The Golden Eagles got a bit of offense going in the middle of the second period, and played essentially even with the Knights in the second and third periods.

The Golden Knights changed things up in the fourth quarter with a strong late push to put the game away. The Knights led just 10-7 at the mid-point of the final quarter, but a Connor Matthews unassisted goal at the 6:28 mark sparked a late run. Thomas Fiebich scored a man-up goal at 5:47 and then picked up another a few seconds later when face-off man Matthew Hansen found him in front, giving the Knights a 13-7 advantage. Clarkson tacked on some insurance goals late, with Matthews, Andrew Kearney, and Tyler Hall each scoring in the final three minutes.

Clarkson finished with hefty advantages in shots (51-23), shots on goal (31-13), groundballs (47-16), and face-off wins (20-5). Jacob Mattice made six saves for the Knights and Cameron Kuzniar had 15 stops for Brockport.

Thomas Fiebich led the Knights with six points, scoring twice late and also assisting on four goals. Matt Reilly produced five points with four goals and an assist, while Connor Matthews scored three times and both Christian Canino and Andrew Kearney also tossed in two goals. Tyler Hall and Sam Mancabelli each had a goal and an assist. Matthew Hansen was almost automatic on face-offs, winning 18 of 21 attempts with 14 groundballs. Bryan Penney also had five groundballs while both Mason Volley and Steve Kay caused two turnovers with three groundballs.

For Brockport, Jackson Worden led the team with four points on two goals and two assists, and Ryan McCarthy contributed three points thanks to a pair of goals and one assist. Anthony McGee posted three groundballs.
