Fifth-Ranked William Smith Downs Clarkson, 17-6

Geneva, NY – Maddie Montgomery and Kaitlyn Pellechia each scored five points for fifth-ranked William Smith as the home team defeated the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team 17-6 in Liberty League action Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in conference games, while William Smith remained unbeaten at 6-0 and 1-0. Clarkson plays another top-15 team in the country on Saturday as the Green and Gold face Ithaca College.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard in the opening minute when Chrissy Benedict found the back of the net, but that was the only goal for the Golden Knights for the next 25 minutes. William Smith tied the game at 10:18 and took the lead on a Kaitlin Pellechia goal two minutes later, and the Herons steadily built up their lead for the rest of the quarter and into the second period. When Madelynn Barnum scored with 3:30 remaining, it brought Clarkson back to within six (8-2), but Maddie Montgomery scored two free-position goals in the final 15 seconds to put the Herons up by eight at the break.

William Smith eventually expanded the margin to 10 goals for the first time with a little over two minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Clarkson made sure the clock would take breaks on a few occasions with goals in the fourth quarter, trimming the margin to nine on two occasions. Two late goals gave William Smith its final margin of 11.

Lauren Shanahan scored three goals to lead the Golden Knights' offense and also added four draw controls. Madelynn Barnum scored twice with three groundballs and two draws, and Chrissy Benedict accounted for Clarkson's other goal. Rylee Ganter was busy on defense for the Green and Gold, contributing five caused turnovers.

For William Smith, Maddie Montgomery had two goals and three assists for five points while Kaitlin Pellechia scored five goals. Allie McGinty had a pair of goals and two assists and Katherine Murray scored three times. Liza Diffley had six caused turnovers and six groundballs.

Overall, William Smith held a 32-19 edge in shots (30-15 shots on goal) and caused 17 turnovers. Maura Smeader made nine saves for the Herons and Jenneca McGill stopped 13 shots for Clarkson.
