Knights Take Two from Potsdam, 6-0 and 3-2

Potsdam, NY – Devin Fitzpatrick tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and Riley Page followed with a complete-game effort of her own as the Clarkson University Softball team swept a doubleheader from SUNY Potsdam 6-0 and 3-2 on Monday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 10-8 on the season while Potsdam fell to 3-15 on the year. Clarkson opens up conference play this weekend as the team will play doubleheaders at St. Lawrence and Rensselaer on Saturday and Sunday.

In the opener, Fitzpatrick did not a baserunner until the fifth inning, but Clarkson had only pushed one run across by that point, keeping the game a pitchers' duel.  Clarkson picked up its run in the second inning as Emma Sabourin opened with a single and then stole second. Two groundouts advanced Sabourin the next two bases, as she came home on Katy Aldous's bouncer to the right side.

The Knights picked up some breathing room with a run in the sixth when Elizabeth Greco delivered a two-out single to right to plate Bridget Kerwin, and the team created a healthy margin in the seventh. Kerwin singled home two runs, Sabourin drove in another, and an Elizabeth Greco hit to left made it 6-0.

Kerwin, Sabourin, and Greco each had two hits in the first game, and Fitzpatrick picked up the win, striking out seven over seven frames.

In game two, Clarkson appeared on its way to a second straight shutout behind the pitching of Page, but Potsdam scored two in the bottom of the sixth for a tight finish. Clarkson picked up a run in the third on a Bridget Twaits single to center to score Kaya Johnson, and in the fourth Emma Sabourin and Bridget Kerwin had a double steal for one run before Sabourin scored on a Greco single through the right side of the infield.

Potsdam picked up its runs in the sixth with Alexa Abbatantuono tripling to left center to drive in Kaylee Dobransky, and then Abbatantuono came home on an infield error. However, that was all the Bears could muster, as Page set the side down in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure her sixth win of the season.
