CU Softball Preview - at St. Lawrence/Rensselaer (4/15-16)

The conference season begins this weekend for the Clarkson University Softball team as well as the rest of the Liberty League as the Golden Knights have two road doubleheaders this weekend, one close by against St. Lawrence and another a few hours away at Rensselaer.

The Series: The Golden Knights have won five of eight meetings against St. Lawrence since 2021, but the two teams have split the past three doubleheaders. Clarkson is 3-12 all-time against the Engineers, including a pair of losses against RPI in 2022. Clarkson's last victory versus the Engineers was in a doubleheader split in 2019.

Key Stats at Clarkson (10-8, 0-0 Liberty League): After a pair of wins against SUNY Potsdam on Monday, the Golden Knights are two games above .500 for the first time in 2023. Clarkson has received steady pitching as of late as Devin Fitzpatrick and Riley Page have settled in. Fitzpatrick has a pair of complete game shutouts and has struck out 42 over 56.2 innings of work while allowing just seven walks. She ranks 30th nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio among pitchers with at least 50 innings and is also in the top 35 in in walks per seven among pitcher with 50 innings or more. Page has a 3.76 earned run average and has 38 strikeouts in 52.2 innings while allowing hitters a .265 batting average.

Key Stats for St. Lawrence (3-13, 0-0 Liberty League): The top two regulars for the Saints are Stella VanGee (.354/.436/.396) and Meredith Rose (.352/.351/.500), though Olivia Caporale has a .462/.500/.538 slash line in 28 plate appearances. Besides those three, the Saints don't have a lot of punch on offense. The team is hitting .245 overall, but without the numbers from the three aforementioned hitters, St. Lawrence is hitting .188. Sofia Berryhill is the team's top pitcher with a 4.32 earned run average and 19 strikeouts in 35.2 innings of work.

Key Stats for Rensselaer (15-5, 0-0 Liberty League): The Engineers like to switch up pitchers during games, as the team has just two complete games from its hurlers in 20 contests. The strategy has worked for the most part, as reliever Brooke Sroczinski has a 2.23 earned run average and 44 strikeouts in 31.1 innings of work, with 11 of her 12 appearances coming in relief. Offensively, Callista Adorno is hitting .439/.514/.649 with 18 runs scored and 19 more driven in, though she can be pitched to, as she has struck out once in every five plate appearances this season. Erin Askins (.387/.465/.484), Alex Ledger (.357/.419/.554), and Gabby Comeau (.348/.389/.394) round out a solid offense.
