Rochester Holds Off Knights, 17-12

Rochester, NY – Freshman Lauren Shanahan recorded six points on five goals and an assist, but her effort was not enough as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 17-12 decision to University of Rochester in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to .500 at 7-7 overall and moved to 2-5 in Liberty League contests, while Rochester edged up to even in league games at 3-3 and moved to 8-5 on the season. Clarkson takes on St. Lawrence University on Wednesday and faces Bard College next Saturday.

Rochester scored in the opening minute of Saturday's contest, and never trailed in the game, though the Golden Knights would tie the score twice in the first period. The Yellowjackets picked up some breathing room early in the second quarter, only to see Clarkson score three times in a stretch of less than two minutes, including a pair of free-positions goals from Shanahan, to knot the game up at 5-5. Two goals in the final five minutes of the half helped Rochester take a lead into the locker room.

Although Clarkson would get back to within one on three occasions in the third period, the Knights could never tally the equalizer. Rochester took advantage of the scoring drought, scoring four straight goals to end the period, including three in the final three minutes. Again, Clarkson would rally in the fourth with four straight, including a pair of goals from freshman Brooklynne Perrigo near the midway point of the quarter, but with the Knights within two (14-12), Rochester's defense buckled down and kept the Green and Gold from finding the momentum for a final push.

Shanahan scored six points to lead all scorers in the game, while Madelynn Barnum scored three times, caused three turnovers, and also won 10 draw controls. Chrissy Benedict scored three points on two goals and an assist, and Perrigo also scored twice. Rylee Ganter had five groundballs and caused three turnovers for Clarkson.

For the Yellowjackets, Alyssa Gorny and Grace Crochiere each scored five times and Lucy Haggerty found her teammates for five assists. Emma Little also scored twice while also contributing two caused turnover and eight draws.

Rochester finished with a 28-26 lead in shots, though the tally for shots on goal was even at 20-20. Groundballs were also even at 19-19, and Rochester won 18 draws to Clarkson's 14. In the Clarkson crease, Jennaca McGill made three saves in about 45 minutes, and Dani Moran did not make any stops in her 15 minutes of play. Emily Geiss made eight saves for the Jackets.
