Knights Open Up 2023 with Four-Set Win at DeSales

Center Valley, PA – Fifteen aces in the season-opener allowed the Clarkson University Volleyball team to swing the momentum on a few occasions as the Golden Knights opened the 2023 campaign with a 3-1 victory over DeSales University (25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22) on Friday night.

The Golden Knights will face two more teams in Pennsylvania on Saturday, taking on Dickinson and Rutgers-Camden tomorrow afternoon.

Clarkson didn't so much come out strong at the start of the first set as DeSales struggled, with the Golden Knights picking up seven of their first 10 points on miscues by the Bulldogs from the service line, on serve receive, and on swings at the net. Sara Galante did record a pair of aces in the early going and gave the Knights a solid lead, one from which the Knights would never look back, cruising to a 25-16 victory in the opener. Emily Alexander was solid from the right side with four kills on just six attempts.

The second set was a closer affair, as the Knights did hold a three-point lead (9-6), only to see DeSales rattle off six straight thanks to two kills, a block, and an ace. Clarkson recovered and scored seven points in a stretch of eight, but DeSales came back to tie the set at 21-21. The game was tied again two points later, but kills from Galante, Alexander, and Galante again put Clarkson up 2-0.

Set number three was close like the second, but this time without the wide swings in momentum. The set was tied on 15 occasions, including several late. DeSales enjoyed a two-point lead (20-18) late, forcing the Knights to take a timeout, and break worked for Clarkson as the Green and Gold responded with four straight to take a 22-20 advantage. A timeout for the Bulldogs also did the trick, as DeSales tied the match at 22 and never trailed again, picking up a kill and an ace to close out the set with a two-point victory.

The fourth set saw a large run midway through the game to put the Knights up by eight. Clarkson started off with four straight points to take an early lead, but DeSales scored eight of the next 10 to quickly shift the momentum. A few points later, Clarkson scored six straight with a pair of kills from Julia Bennett and two more aces from Galante, and the Knights eventually rolled out to an eight-point lead (20-12). DeSales would not go away down the stretch, chipping away at the deficit and getting to within four on two occasions, with the second time forcing Clarkson to take a timeout to regroup. After an error trimmed the margin to only three, Tess Sorel delivered a kill to end the run and Julia Bennett's kill a couple points later ended the match.

Clarkson showed a diverse offense throughout, with three players finishing in double figures for kills and two setters topping 20 assists. Allyson Treichel hit above .500 in the match with 12 kills against just one error on 21 swings, while both Sara Galante and Marin Hangliter recorded 10 kills each. Hangliter also picked up 13 digs, while Galante had four aces and nine digs. Isabelle Crow led the team with 21 assists while also producing three aces and nine digs, and Anna Mayer had 20 assists and four kills on only nine attempts. Defensively, Abigail Spector had a team-best 21 digs, while also contributing seven assists and three aces, while Tess Sorel had three total blocks (including two solo) and three aces.
