Knights Busy Block Too Much for Vassar in Three-Set Sweep

Potsdam, NY – After a slow start in the first set, the Clarkson University Volleyball team found another gear on offense and defense, winning 57 of 73 points from the end of the first set through a rapid start to the third, as the Golden Knights swept Vassar College in the Liberty League opener, 25-20, 25-8, 25-15, Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference games, while Vassar fell to 5-6 and 0-1. Clarkson will take on Bard College on Saturday afternoon,

In the opener, Clarkson rolled out to a 6-2 lead, only to see Vassar quickly come back and tie the set. The two teams jostled back and forth for the next dozen points or so before Vassar scored four straight thanks to kills from Holland Kaplan and Rebecca Gutierrez, putting the tally at 16-12. From that point on in the set, the Knights dominated, winning 11 of 12 points with a variety of kills, blocks, and aces as well as a few errors from Vassar. The set tightened a bit at the end, but kills from Marin Hangliter and Olivia Freer put Clarkson up 1-0. Clarkson produced 16 kills in the first set, while the Brewers had just seven.

The momentum clearly continued in the second set for the Knights, though they did not dominate from the start. Vassar was within three (7-4) early on, but Clarkson put together an 8-0 run, started by blocks from Natalie Peacock and ending with the same name at 15-4. Tess Sorel and Sara Galante put down kills late in the set as the Knights eased to a double-digit win. Vassar struggled mightily in the set with four kills and 12 errors on 28 swings.

The third set was more of the same for the Knights as the team posted 15 kills with only four errors, most coming late. Clarkson was up 11-3 and squashed any hopes of a comeback by the Brewers as the team went on another 8-0 run. Marin Hangliter started things off with a kill and then retreated to the service line as her teammates recorded six consecutive kills to put the score at 19-4. Although Vassar rallied late, the outcome was decided earlier thanks to the huge lead, as the Knights again won by double figures.

Natalie Peacock hit .500 in the match (6-1-10) and also had six total blocks with two solo efforts and four block assists. Olivia Freer also had five blocks, one as a solo and four assists. Sara Galante struck for 10 kills, Tess Sorel added eight kills, and Allyson Treichel notched seven kills. Galante and Abigail Spector each contributed 12 digs, while Isabelle Crow had 22 assists and Anna Mayer posted 10 assists.

For Vassar, Holland Kaplan had six kills, but she and the other top two hitters for the Brewers had negative hitting percentages. Vassar hit -.034 for the match (19-22-89). Ellie Kogan recorded 10 digs and Melia Voss had nine assists.
