Clarkson Falls in Four Sets to Middlebury

Saratoga Springs, NY – After picking up a win with a strong offensive showing in the first set, the Clarkson University Volleyball team's offense struggled against Middlebury College, eventually falling to the Panthers in four sets (19-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-13) on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 8-6 on the season while Middlebury College's record is now 8-4. Clarkson will return to conference play next weekend against RIT and William Smith with an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot with a sweep and some midseason help around the league.

The first set against the Panthers on Saturday morning was tied 11 times, with the final knot occurring at 17-17. Clarkson regained the lead on a kill from Olivia Freer and extended it with three more points to gain a four-point advantage. Sara Galante, Tess Sorel, and Allyson Treichel put the set out of reach with three more kills as the Knights hit .387 in the opener (15-3-31).

Clarkson's offense struggled in the next two sets, as the team hit negative in both the second and third games. In the second, Middlebury built an early lead and advanced the margin to 10 through the first 20 points, cruising to the win. The third set was close through the first 12 points, but a 6-0 run by the Panthers, including three kills from Molly Harrison, put the gap at eight. Clarkson climbed back to within five, but the offensive mistakes kept Clarkson from completing a comeback.

The fourth set saw Clarkson correct its offensive shortcomings from the middle two sets, but Middlebury picked up key aces when it needed to. Up by two (11-9), Gabbie O'Toole delivered a pair of aces in a 5-0 run to put the gap at seven, and a few moments later Katie Kraczkowsky picked up a pair of aces in another 5-0 run which all but ended any hope of a Clarkson rally.

Allyson Treichel led the Clarkson offense on Saturday with nine kills. Both Marin Hangliter and Sara Galante picked up four kills, though each contributed in other ways as Hangliter had 10 digs and a pair of aces and Galante notched four digs, three blocks, and two aces. Isabelle Crow led the offense with 21 assists and Anna Mayer had 10 assists and seven digs. Abigail Spector recorded 14 digs.

For Middlebury, Molly Harrison had a double-double on 14 kills and 10 digs while Katie Kraczkowsky had a 12-0-35 line on attack to go along with four aces. Gabbie O'Toole ran the offense with 40 assists and also added in five aces, and Kelly Ferrero picked up 22 digs.
