Knights Lock In Third Seed for Liberty League Playoffs With Sweep of Bard

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – With a fifth straight win overall, the Clarkson University Volleyball team clinched the third spot and a first round home playoff game in the process as the Golden Knights finished off their Liberty League schedule with a three-set (25-19, 25-16, 25-19) win over Bard College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 12-12 on the season and 5-3 in conference matches while Bard fell to 4-18 and 0-6. Clarkson is on a bye week in conference since the team has finished up its league matches and will have to wait and see how a somewhat muddled conference landscape plays out to determine its first round conference opponent.

In the opening set, Bard had its hopes up with a couple of early three-point leads, but the Knights went on a 6-0 run to gain the lead at 11-8. The Raptors came back to tie the set at 13 only to see Clarkson score seven of the next nine to gain a five-point advantage. That was enough breathing room for the Knights as they ended up with a six-point win.

Bard again had the early lead in the second set and stuck close to start, but it was a repeat of the first as the Knights picked up five straight points for a 13-8 lead at the halfway mark of the set. A few errors by the Knights kept the Raptors in it, but a service ace by Cecelia Velardi had Clarkson up by seven (20-13). It was only a matter of time from that point on, as the Knights won the second game by nine.

Clarkson took less time before asserting itself with a long run in the third set. Down by two very early, Clarkson scored nine straight, capped off by a Tess Sorel kill to make it 11-4. Bard would not fold, though, clawing back to tie the set at 18 and then again at 19. But that was the last gasp for the Raptors, as the hosts had to watch Clarkson rattle off six straight, many points coming on blocks at the net and the final one on an ace from Emma Cortez.

Ashley Currier had 23 assists, three aces and 10 digs for the Knights and Abigail Spector picked up 14 digs and six assists. Grace Hanson picked up 13 kills and Marin Hangliter delivered 10 more kills for Clarkson while Tess Sorel produced four blocks.

For Bard Becca Wintjen posted 20 assists and Ella Small had 14 digs.
