Knights Battle In Five-Set Defeat Against William Smith in Liberty League Semifinals

Ithaca, NY – Once again the Clarkson University Volleyball team proved itself to be a tough out in the Liberty League Tournament, as the Golden Knights suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss to William Smith, 22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17, 15-13 in the conference semifinals Friday afternoon on the campus of Ithaca College.

The Green and Gold saw their record fall to 13-15 on the season, while William Smith moved to 22-5.

In the opener, the two teams were tied six times and traded the lead six more times from points 1-to-11 before William Smith finally rolled off five straight to take a 15-12 lead, scoring all of those points via some sort of miscue by the Knights (service error, reception error, or attack error). Clarkson regrouped and went on a 6-1 run thanks to kills from Grace Hanson, Allyson Treichel, and Tess Sorel to regain the advantage. Though the set would be tied a couple of times, Clarkson would never trail again, claiming the set thanks to back-to-back kills from Hanson. Clarkson's defense was on point, allowing just a .079 hitting percentage in the first game.

The second set saw William Smith rediscover the offense that helped them win matches all season long, hitting .262 with 17 kills, but it took some time before the Herons could shake the Golden Knights. The two teams tied one another for the first 20 points as no team could score more than two in a row. That finally changed near the midway mark as the Herons scored four of five to gain a three-point lead (14-11) forcing the Knights to take a timeout. Clarkson would get back to within one point on a few occasions, but never found enough to tie the set again. William Smith recorded kills on eight of its final nine points of the set with four different players putting the ball down to close out the set.

Following consecutive attack errors by the Knights in the third set, William Smith enjoyed a 10-5 lead. However, Clarkson went on a 5-0 run to tie the game, allowed the Herons to score once, and then scored six more for a 16-11 advantage, putting William Smith in a position to call for a timeout. A few moments later, an ace by Emma Cortez put the tally at 21-14. It was the Herons time to recover after that, scoring six of seven to pull back within two (22-20). A key error off the antennae gave Clarkson some much-needed breathing room, and then block assists from Hanson and Treichel put the Knights one point away from a 2-1 lead. Hanson followed with another kill to close the game out, 25-20.

In the fourth, outside of the first few points, the Golden Knights found themselves trying to play catch-up to the Herons. Three straight aces from Malya Sayre put the score at 7-3 early on and after a single point from the Knights, William Smith put up five more to take a 12-4 advantage. The Herons twice had the margin at double digits and cruised to a 25-17 victory to force the fifth and deciding set.

Unsurprisingly, the two teams seesawed in the first handful of points before the Knights scored three straight to put some pressure on the Herons, getting kills from Hanson and Treichel and an ace by Abigail Spector to put the tally at 7-4. The two teams traded timeouts around points from the Herons, but it was the Knights up 8-6 at the midway point. After the bench switch, the Herons rattled off four straight, getting kills from Hope Von Dohlen and Emily Fulton as well as an ace and a block, forcing Clarkson to take its final timeout down by two (10-8). The Knights rallied with three straight to reclaim the lead, but again the set return to trading points. Finally, a kill from Malya Sayre and an attempt by the Knights that went just wide ended the set and the match.

Marin Hangliter delivered 17 kills and a .333 hitting percentage from the outside to lead the Clarkson offense. Allyson Treichel posted 11 kills and five blocks while both Grace Hanson and Tess Sorel produced 10 kills. Ashley Currier had 39 assists, Olivia Hanson recorded five aces, and Abigail Spector notched 24 digs.

On the William Smith side, Malya Sayre had 25 kills, 5 aces, and 16 digs and Jaylynn McCarthy posted 13 kills with a .345 hitting percentage Delainy Williams had 52 assists and 10 digs, Kali Vanderhoof posted 28 digs, and Marin Montagne had 19 digs and eight kills.
