Late Goal Sends Knights to Season-Opening Defeat at Muhlenberg, 8-7

Allentown, PA – The final two-plus minutes of the fourth quarter saw each team score a man-up goal, but it was Muhlenberg that would score last, sending the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team to a season-opening defeat on the road, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania.

The Golden Knights will get a few days off before again heading out to visit another school, taking on Brockport next Wednesday. Clarkson will host its home-opener next Saturday against Nazareth University.

Matt Reilly finished the contest with three goals and an assist for a team-best four points to lead the Knights, while Sebastian Geiger scored twice. Tyler Hall and Thomas Fiebich also produced two points apiece.

An early offside call gave Clarkson a man-up opportunity, and the Knights quickly converted. The Green and Gold worked the ball around the perimeter and Thomas Fiebich found Matt Reilly on the left side, where he ripped a 10-yard shot into the bottom corner to give Clarkson an early 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, the Knights again found the back of the net on the other side, as Reilly assisted on a Sebastian Geiger goal. Muhlenberg outshot Clarkson 9-5 in the first quarter, with Griffin Emerson stopping five shots in the opening 15 minutes.

The Mules got on the scoreboard early in the second thanks to a man-up goal. The Knights were whistled for a slashing penalty and Chase Kusko took a shot at a tough angle, squeezing his shot between Emerson and the post for a goal at 12:32 in the second. After killing off a one-minute penalty, the Knights regained their two-goal advantage with Tyler Hall locating Geiger just outside the crease at 10:04.

Clarkson finished the half trailing on shots (18-14), though shots on goal were even at 7-7. Muhlenberg also had a narrow margin in groundballs (12-9) while faceoffs were even at three apiece.

Muhlenberg came out with a different offense in the third, as Jack Bill scored twice in the first three minutes and three times in the quarter, including two on the man-up. The Mules produced five straight goals in the quarter and their defense stood tall as well with Stephen Krug making some outstanding saves to keep the momentum on Muhlenberg's side. It wasn't until the final seconds of the quarter that the Knights were able to end the run, as Tyler Hall scored with just 10 seconds left in the third.

Five minutes into the fourth quarter, Matt Reilly scored, only to see Jack Bill of Muhlenberg respond less than a minute later. However, the Knights kept the pressure on the Mules when Reilly sprinted towards the net with another hard shot, putting the score at 7-6. Clarkson put pressure on the Mules in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, taking numerous shots at the Muhlenberg cage, and the home team took a penalty on a slash, giving the Knights a chance on the man-up. From behind the net, Thomas Fiebich discovered Andrew Kearney open on the left side, where he whipped a shot in to tie the game with 2:04 to go.

Muhlenberg picked up a man-up chance with a little over a minute remaining. The Mules took their time to run out the clock and went to their top scorer of the day as Jack Bill found some space at the top, ripping a shot from 15 yards out to score what would prove to be the game-winner with 18 seconds left in the contest.

Muhlenberg finished with a 46-38 lead in shots and a 27-21 edge in ground balls. The Mules also scored four times while up a player. Griffin Emerson made 11 saves in the crease for Clarkson and Stephen Krug stopped 11 shots for Muhlenberg.
