Lavarnway's Seven Points Lead Knights to 14-9 Win at Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY – A highly efficient second quarter saw the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team score six goals on seven shots as the Golden Knights cruised to a 14-9 win over Vassar College in the Liberty League opener Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights remained undefeated with the win, improving to 4-0 and 1-0 in conference games, while Vassar dropped to 1-4 and 0-1. Clarkson heads further south for two games next week, taking on Rowan University on Monday in Sparks, MD and then Hood College on Wednesday in Frederick, MD.

The two teams combined for 11 shots in the first period and then hit the same mark in the second quarter, but it was the second where much of the scoring took place. Clarkson led 2-1 through 15 minutes, but then found the back of the net for six on only seven shots in the second. While Hailey Millington and Kaitlyn McNamara scored in the first five minutes of the period, it was the final five minutes that saw the Green and Gold score four times. Madelynn Barnum scored unassisted at 4:18 and 3:15 and Grace Graney and Makenna Cassin each scored in the waning minutes of the period.

By the midway point of the third, Clarkson had scored three more to take an 11-3 lead, but the Knights could never quite get to the point where the clock would keep rolling. Gabby Cranfield scored at the start of the fourth to put the Knights up 13-5, but Vassar trimmed the margin in the final half of the period, scoring five times in the final 7:30 of the game.

Julia Lavarnway scored seven points for the Knights, recording three goals and four assists in the win. Madelynn Barnum had four goals and caused three turnovers, while Hailey Millington added three points on two goals and an assist. Makenna Cassin also scored twice and Gabby Cranfield had two points. Jennaca McGill made seven saves in the Clarkson crease.

For Vassar, Tess Billings scored three goals and Lola Wright had three points (1-2-3) with seven draw controls. Riley Kelly also snagged three groundballs. In goal for Vassar, Lauren Johns made four saves in the first 45 minutes, while Bree MacMullen stopped two shots in the fourth quarter.
