Knights Halt Losing Streak with Win in Game Two of Split with Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – Starting early to avoid afternoon rain, the Clarkson University Baseball team and Skidmore College played two fairly quick low-scoring games in cold damp weather with the Thoroughbreds coming out on top in the opener 5-2 and the Golden Knights claiming the second game 4-1 at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 8-14 overall while Skidmore saw its record go to 14-10. Clarkson is scheduled for a non-league nine-inning game against SUNY Canton on Wednesday and then has a three-game set versus Hobart College next Friday and Saturday, all at home.

In the opener, Skidmore's Ameer Hasan and Clarkson's Nicholas Hofacker matched zeroes for the first five frames as it took some time for either team to put a runner in scoring position. Clarkson finally squeaked a run across in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Pagano walked, moved to second on a sac bunt, and then advanced to third on an error. Aidan Kuefner reached on a fielder's choice as he legged it out to first before Skidmore could complete a double play, allowing Pagano to score. Clarkson seemingly scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Kuefner and Joe Figliolino delivered back-to-back hits and Kent Wilson put down a sac bunt, reaching on an error and sending Kuefner home to make it 2-0.

Skidmore had been held to three hits for the first eight innings, but wildness from the Clarkson pitchers and timely hits changed that in the ninth. The bases were loaded with a walk and two hits. Andy Pelc then walked to force home a run and Jaden Torrado later walked to push another run across, tying the game 2-2. Shaw Pedemonti singled in the go-ahead run and Trey Bourque singled in a pair to finish off the account of Skidmore's five runs in the ninth.

Kuefner, Figliolino, and Cam Jerrett each had two hits for the Knights in the first game. Hofacker turned out to be the tough-luck loser, going eight plus innings and giving up three earned runs with five strikeouts. Christian Giresi claimed the win in relief and Sam Dalsimer earned a three-out save in the bottom of the ninth.

More zeroes went on the scoreboard in game two, but the Golden Knights wouldn't have to wait until the sixth to score, picking up two runs in the second and then a run in both the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the first, Figliolino reached on an error and Wilson doubled to put both players in scoring position. Quinn Maslowski's sac fly plated Figliolino and Jake Millich followed with an infield single to score Wilson to make it 2-0. In the third, Kuefner singled and an error pushed him to third, allowing for Maslowski's clean single to left to make it 3-0. The fourth inning saw Joe Pagano double and then come home on a CJ Cartier single for a 4-0 Clarkson lead.

Meanwhile, Mateo Sarabia was pitching well for the second time in as many starts. He eventually allowed a run in the seventh when Owen Roy doubled to open the inning, and two batters later a fly ball to right scored him from third. But that was all the Thoroughbreds would put together as Sarabia picked up the win, allowing five hits and striking out five in seven frames. Chase Siegel took the loss, going four innings and giving up six hits and four runs, though just one was earned.
