Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Knights Endure Delay, Fall to 8th-Ranked Union 12-9 in Liberty League Playoffs

Schenectady, NY – A near three-hour lightning delay and a driving rain late made conditions tough for the offenses early on Tuesday, as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team ended up on the short side of a 12-9 decision against eighth-ranked Union College in the Liberty League's First Round playoff game.

Clarkson saw its season come to a close with a record of 8-9 overall while Union moved to 12-4 with second-ranked RIT awaiting in the Liberty League Semifinals this weekend.

After a quiet first half, the teams' offenses opened up in the second with quick bursts of offense. Clarkson led briefly in the middle of the third quarter, but a four-goal outburst from Union saw the Garnet Chargers regain the momentum and hold off the Green and Gold.

The Golden Knights' defense was strong in the first seven minutes of the opening quarter, but Union was able to score in the waning seconds of a man-up chance, as Jake Mabardy found the back of the net in transition. Clarkson tied the game a few moments later on a couple of solid dodges by Joe Kelley, but Union scored a pair of goals in a 10-second span to make it 3-1.

Union scored early in the second quarter to gain a 4-1 advantage, only to see Clarkson's defense seemingly buckle down even more than it had in the first 15 minutes. The Garnet Chargers were forced into a number of turnovers and whistled for a few procedural issues as well, giving the visiting Knights a chance to chip away. Alex Seiler scored from about 10 yards out to the left of goalie Dan Donahue at 9:02, and Mario Streiff bounced one between the legs of the Union goalkeeper with 2:07 remaining to pull Clarkson within one late in the half.

Union picked up a goal with a little over nine minutes remaining in the third to regain a two-goal advantage. However, the Knights scored twice in a stretch of just a minute near the midway point of the period. A nifty tick-tack-toe goal from Alex Seiler to Andrew Kearney to Sebastian Geiger brought the Knights back to within one at 7:45. Seiler was tripped up in front and nearly lost the ball, but tipped the ball over to Matt Reilly, allowing the senior midfielder to rip a shot from about 10 yards out while the defense Union was regrouping, tying the game at 6:49. A little over two minutes later, Clarkson gained its first lead of the game when Mario Streiff spun back into the midfield with a lefty shot, skipping it past Donahue at 4:17. Less than a minute later, Matt Reilly picked up a loose ball in front of the net and flipped it in before the scrum recovered, making it 7-5.

The momentum seemingly was in Clarkson's favor, but Union scored four straight in rapid succession. Union was back within one on a goal by Peter Kip at 2:13 and tied the game when Emmett Lyne got behind the Clarkson defense for a one-on-one goal at 1:32. Two faceoff wins for the Garnet Chargers saw two more goals at 1:26 and 1:13.

The break between quarters gave Clarkson some time to reset, but the Knights were still on their heels for the start of the fourth. Union picked up a goal at 11:56 before Clarkson had a chance to take a shot in the period, but when the Knights did finally get possession, they made the Garnet Chargers pay, as Tyler Hall scored at the 10:18 mark to make it 10-8. Less than a minute later a long skip pass to Geiger saw the grad student bounce a lefty shot past Donahue to get the Knights within one.

Late in the game, it looked like Clarkson might be the recipient of a rain-induced turnover when Peter Kip went hard to his left and briefly lost his footing, but he recovered before the Clarkson defense could and slipped a righty shot just over the left thigh of Clarkson goalkeeper Griffin Emerson at 3:31. Kip would score a backbreaker 90 seconds later, giving Union a three-goal lead with less than two minutes to go, and the Garnet Chargers would hold on from there.

Geiger finished with three goals and Mario Streiff added a pair of scores. Tyler Hall, Matt Reilly, Alex Seiler, and Joe Kelly each scored once. Reilly also topped the team with six groundballs, while Matt Szwagulinski caused three turnovers and scooped up five groundballs. Griffin Emerson made 10 saves in the Clarkson crease.

For Union, Peter Kip scored five points on four goals and an assist and three others tacked on three points for the offense. Matthew Paolatto had 13 groundballs and was 20-for-25 on faceoffs, and Dan Donahue made 11 saves.
