Knights Drop Pair in Rochester

Rochester, NY – The top two pitchers for University of Rochester kept the Clarkson University Baseball team's bats quiet, as the Golden Knights fell in a pair of low-scoring contests, dropping the first game 2-0 and the second contest 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Towers Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 7-11 overall and 0-7 in conference games while Rochester moved to 11-11 and 6-2. The two teams will finish off the three-game set with one nine-inning game slated to begin at 11:00 am at Monroe Community College.

Rochester's Nolan Sparks was dealing in the first game of the series, striking out nine over nine innings and giving up just three hits against no walks. The Yellowjackets got all they would need in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Alec Ellison that plated Jackson Reed. In the second, an attempted double steals with Dan Tirabassi and Sammy Besztery was thwarted when Besztery was cut down on the base paths, but Tirabassic still scored on the play to put the score at 2-0.

Clarkson put runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, and ninth innings. CJ Cartier singled with one out and stole second but was stranded in the fourth, Pat Elliott singled with one out and also stole second but advanced no further in the fifth. Cartier also reached on a fielder's choice and moved up to second on a wild pitch, but that would be as far as he would get.

Mateo Sarabia pitched well for the Knights, allowing eight hits and two walks for a total of two earned runs over 6.2 innings, striking out five along the way. Hunter Geisler kept Rochester scoreless for the final 2.1 innings, giving up just one hit with a strikeout.

Game two saw Rochester push three runs across in the fourth, and that proved to be enough offense. Josh Leadem singled and Nathan Carpenter-Holmes followed with a walk. Dylan Stezzi then doubled in one run and Luke Gregory's sacrifice fly plated another to put the score at 2-0. Henry Jamieson then delivered a ground-rule double for a third run for the Yellowjackets.

Rochester picked up a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Alec Ellison and added another in the eighth on a squeeze play. Clarkson got its offense going in the bottom of the eighth as Christopher Griggs began things with a pinch-hit single. Aidan Kuefner followed with a double, allowing Kent Wilson's single to score Griggs. Joe Figliolino's sac fly sent Kuefner home to make it 5-2, but the Knights would come up empty in the bottom of the ninth.

Derrick Lewis took the loss, throwing four innings and giving up six hits while striking out five. Nicholas Hofacker tossed the last five innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Dillon Bevan earned the win for the Jackets, scattering six hits with two walks over eight frames. Mark Aaronson threw a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to gain the save.
