Knights Hold Off 16-Ranked Plattsburgh in 1-1 Tie

Potsdam, NY – The visitors had their chances in the second half, but the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team's defense stood tall down the stretch as the Golden Knights tied 16th-ranked Plattsburgh State 1-1 on Wednesday evening at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-0-2 on the season with their second straight tie, while the Cardinals saw their record go to 3-0-2. Clarkson is on the road this weekend, as the team travels to take on Alfred State on Saturday.

For the second straight game at Hantz, the away team got on the scoreboard early. After the ball bounced around the midfield, Xavier Kamba took possession on the right side and sent a cross to the opposite side of the box. Jake McGowan attempted a hard shot from the top of the penalty area but was blocked in short order. The ball didn't move out of the area, spinning a few yards away to the left foot of Bradyn Primus, who then scored on a shot to the left of a diving Carter Kladstrup at 3:45.

The Golden Knights tied the game about 18 minutes later on another somewhat broken play. A high pass from the Clarkson defensive end was headed by a Plattsburgh player, but the Knights took possession when Zach Shufelt was able to make a turn up field. He then played a give-and-go with Daniel Medina, with Medina making a shot pass to Shufelt's right foot. With a Plattsburgh player on the ground somewhat obscuring the view of goalkeeper Teddy Healy, Shufelt's shot snuck inside the post as Healy watched the ball go by his left side.

Plattsburgh would have the best chance for the remainder of the half, as the Cardinals were rewarded with a penalty kick after a foul at the top of the box. Brian Coughlan's attempt fooled Kladstrup as the Clarkson goalkeeper dove in the opposite direction, but the shot was wide, hitting the outside of the post and bouncing harmlessly out of bounds for a goal kick.

The Cardinals enjoyed several solid scoring chances in the second half, with Kladstrup making a diving stop on a header in the first minute of play after the break. Kladstrup corralled several corner kicks and crosses as well to keep the game tied at 1-1. In the waning seconds of the game, a header from in close went off the underside of the crossbar, and a slow moving kick off a back heel was picked up by Kladstrup to end the threat.

Shots on goal were minimal, as Plattsburgh had just three against Clarkson's one. Overall, the Cardinals held a 12-2 lead in total shots. Plattsburgh also had eight corner kick chances to Clarkson's four.
