Leblanc Posts 20 Saves, Knights Get Timely Scoring in 3-0 Win Over Providence

Providence, RI – Overcoming a slow start and a number of early penalties, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey gained a measure of revenge against Providence, downing the Friars 3-0 in non-league action at Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson evened its record back to 3-3 on the year while the Friars fell to 1-5. The Green and Gold will be on the road against next weekend when the team opens ECAC Hockey play against Union College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The first period was relatively quiet until a flurry of penalties late gave each team some chances. Providence was whistled for a penalty with 2:44 left, but only 29 seconds later Clarkson was called for an infraction to even the game at 4-on-4. Yet another penalty on the Knights had the contest briefly going 4-on-3, creating a chance a little later for a 29-second 5-on-3 opportunity for the Friars. Clarkson did a good job clearing the zone on multiple occasions, both while down two skaters and then later with just one.

More penalties were called in the second period, giving each team ample tries while up a skater but not much came in the way of shots on goal. It wasn't until late in the period that Clarkson ended its power-play woes with a goal from Andrea Trnkova. Megan McKay carried the puck from the opposite blue line into Providence territory, all the way behind the net. A few more passes connected behind the goal and on the right side before the puck found its way out to Trnkova a step inside the blue line. She took one more stride forward before firing a wrist shot on goal, utilizing a screen from Rhea Hicks to get her puck past Hope Walinski with 20 seconds left in the power play at 15:03.

Providence was on its heels in the third period after being behind 15-5 in shots on goal in the second. Clarkson's best scoring chance in the early going of the final period in regulation came from Sara Manness, who had a chance with a one-timer in the high slot at 13:38, only to see it smothered by Walinski. A few minutes later, a redirect off the skate of Madison Chantler nearly beat Walinski, but the puck was knocked aside to briefly end the danger in the Friars' end.

Manness would get on the board a few minutes later out of a media timeout. From the Clarkson defensive zone, Sena Catterall came along the left side boards on a 3-on-3 rush and patiently waited for the Knights to get ahead of the defense. Eventually Catterall sent a pass back into the slot, finding the blade of Manness for a tip-in. The shot just went off Walinski and then stuck inside the net off the post to make it 2-0 at 11:26.

Providence pulled its netminder with a little over two minutes to go, but the extra skater did not help the Friars. A puck leaked out in the neutral zone and both Sena Catterall and Lara Beecher skated past the Providence defense towards the empty net, with Beecher tapping in the empty-netter without a defender in front of her.

Arianne Leblanc recorded a shutout with 20 saves in the Clarkson crease while Walinski had 33 stops. Clarkson finished with a 37-20 edge in shots on goal (68-40 overall) and was 1-for-6 on the power play while the penalty kill finished with a perfect 7-for-7 rate. Clarkson also won 41 of 63 faceoffs in the contest.
