Knights Celebrate Seniors with Pair of Home Matches Versus Union and Buffalo State

Potsdam, NY – Impressive efforts at the net saw the Clarkson University Volleyball team put up some significant block numbers, but neither time was it enough on Saturday as the Golden Knights suffered a three-set defeat against Union College (28-26, 25-16, 25-17) and then a four-set loss against Buffalo State (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21) at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 11-12 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League. The Golden Knights appear to be in a solid position for a playoff spot, but home court advantage is an upward climb. Clarkson would need to beat Skidmore next weekend and also see Vassar fall to RIT to move up to the fourth position.

Union came out rolling with seven of the first eight points only to see Clarkson battle back to tie the set at 10-10 thanks to a kill from Conley Burns. The two teams tied five more times before the Knights finally took the lead on a kill from Marin Hangliter, but Clarkson could not carry that momentum further. The teams tied six more times, forcing the set to extra points, but a kill from Shannon McGrath and an attack error gave the Garnet Chargers the 28-26 win.

The second and third sets saw some streaks at inopportune times go against the Golden Knights. In the second, Clarkson was down by just three near the midway point (12-9), only to see Union go on an 11-5 run, capped by a kill from Shelby McKim. A few points later Shea Ringel finished off the game with a kill. In the third, streaks of three points or more were traded and the set was tight at 15-14, but Union scored five straight, with three kills coming off the arm of Shannon McGrath. Union scored four straight again near the end of the set, and closed out the match at 25-17.

Versus Union, Marin Hangliter led the offense with 12 kills and Conley Burns added eight kills and eight digs. Ashley Currier produced 24 assists and Olivia Baxter contributed 23 digs. Jordyn Leader also scored five blocks with one solo effort and four assists.

In the opening set against Buffalo State, Clarkson turned a three-point deficit into a five-point lead with the 8-0 run being capped by a Marin Hangliter kill. Clarkson still led by four a few moments later (19-15), but the Bengals rallied for five straight to take the lead, eventually winning the set on an Ella Wittman kill.

Set number two saw the teams seesaw back and forth trading runs of three points or more seven times throughout the set. Eventually, the Bengals were on the winning side, taking four of the final five points of the game thanks to three more kills from Wittman. The third was a similar showing except the run seesaw was muted with neither team able to gain a foothold on service for 10 consecutive points. The Bengals appeared ready to close out a sweep, up 21-18 in the third, but Jordyn Leader recorded a kill and Conley Burns picked up two more to tie the set. Moments later, two more kills from Burns gave the Knights the edge, and an error ended it in Clarkson's favor.

The fourth started with Buffalo State winning eight of the first 10 points, but a return to long runs being traded occurred once again. Clarkson scored four straight, but the Bengals responded with four more to return the margin to six points. However, Clarkson scored eight of the next nine, taking the lead on back-to-back kills from Ashley Currier. Clarkson maintained the lead for a bit until a run of five straight points by Buffalo State put the visitors up by three, thanks largely to a strong service run by Alex Arroyo which included a pair of aces. The Bengals led by one (22-21) and ended the match with two kills by Wittman and an error by the Knights.

Against Buffalo State, Conley Burns recorded 22 kills and 14 digs while Marin Hangliter also reached double figures in both categories with 10 kills and 19 digs. Ashley Currier added 38 assists, 14 digs, 3 aces, and 3 block assists, while Haley Currier hit .313 (6-1-16) with seven block assists and eight digs. Ainslie Reimer also hit .313 (5-0-16) and added eight blocks, with two coming as solo tries and six as block assists. Olivia Baxter notched 23 more digs, and Jordyn Leader recorded five blocks assists and three aces.
