Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Nanooks Upend Knights 3-2 in Adirondack Invitational Finale

Lake Placid, NY – A goal in the final three minutes kept the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team from winning the Adirondack Invitational as Alaska Fairbanks outlasted the Golden Knights 3-2 on Saturday night at Herb Brooks Arena.

With the game tied 2-2, Fairbanks picked up the game-winning goal at 17:28 in the third period when Ryan Roersma knocked in a rebound off a shot from Braden Birnie. Although the Knights pulled their goalie for the final two minutes, the team was unable to find the back of the net for overtime.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-11-0 overall while the Nanooks moved to 4-8-1. Clarkson returns to ECAC Hockey play next weekend when it hosts Cornell University and Colgate University at Cheel Arena.

Neither team took much time to get on the scoreboard in the opening period, though it was Fairbanks that would break through first. With the puck in the Nanooks' defensive zone along the right side boards, the puck leaked out into the neutral zone where a check didn't quite hit its mark on Peyton Platter. That helped create a 2-on-1 with Platter coming down the left side and flipping a pass over to Michael Citara, who finished with a quick tap in just a few minutes into the contest.

Clarkson responded with a goal just four minutes later. Luka Sukovic picked up a rebound near the right circle and sent a pass through the slot to Erik Bargholtz, who couldn't find a shooting lane and therefore dropped the puck back to the left point for Matthew Mayich. The freshman skated a little closer and whipped a shot over the shoulder of the Nanooks' Lassi Lehti, just as the goalie had his eyes on a moving screen when the puck was let loose off Mayich's stick for a goal at 6:32.

Both teams had chances for the remainder of the first period, but only Clarkson would find the net one more time before intermission. The Knights had the puck deep in the Fairbanks end and the puck drifted out along the right side boards to Luke Pakulak. He flipped a shot on net, a seemingly harmless attempt thrown on net, but Jace Letourneau was there to redirect the puck past Lehti at 18:27. Conyr Hellyer also picked up an assist on the score for his first career point.

Clarkson was whistled for two early penalties in the second period, putting the Knights on the defensive for a steady stretch. The Green and Gold's defense blocked several attempts during the first penalty kill, but it was Soderwall that made an outstanding save against Platter in the first few seconds of the second power play chance for Fairbanks, sliding to his left to snuff out a rebound attempt.

Midway through the second stanza, Fairbanks again utilized a turnover in the neutral zone to jumpstart its offense. Lucas Sorace clipped the puck off the boards on the opposite side of the benches and helped to create a 2-on-2 the other way for Misha Danylov and Michael Citara. The latter of the two skaters had about a half step on the Clarkson defense and once again scored on a pass through the slot just short of the right circle at 8:48, tying the game 2-2.

In the third, both teams had their chances but were saved by the goaltenders. Shane Soderwall sprawled out to cover several chances, including one to his left and another that saw him jump out at the top of the crease to end the threat. At the other end of the ice, a bounce off the left side boards allowed Luke Pakulak to break free in the slot for a 1-on-1 with Lehti, but the Nanooks' netminder won the battle with a glove save to keep the game tied near the midway point of the frame.

With only 2:40 to go, Fairbanks won a neutral zone draw back into its own zone and played D-to-D with a pass going forwards off the boards near center ice. The puck eluded one of its targets and a Clarkson defender, but the puck continued forward for Braden Birnie just as he entered the Clarkson zone. He had a half stride on the Clarkson defense for 1-on-1 with Soderwall, who denied Birnie's shot in close. However, following the play was Rylen Roersma, who cleaned up the rebound and gave Fairbanks the lead just eight seconds after its draw at the other end of the ice.

Clarkson emptied its net for an extra attacker with two minutes to go, only to see the Nanooks continually clear the zone with icing attempts. The Knights finally got a shot on goal with just 3.3 seconds but Tristan Sarsland's shot was gloved by Lehti to effectively end the contest.

Clarkson won the battle of shots (55-50) and shots on goal (23-21) as well as faceoffs (38-25). The Knights also blocked 16 shots on defense. Both teams were scoreless on the power play, with the Knights going 0-for-3 and the Nanooks at 0-for-2. Soderwall finished with 18 saves and Lehti produced 21 saves.
