Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Clarkson Defense Strong Again in 0-0 Tie Versus Quinnipiac

Hamden, CT – Although the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team was unable to break its scoreless drought, the Golden Knights got just enough during the shootout session to come away with a little extra for the ECAC Hockey standings, tying Quinnipiac 0-0 and winning the second tie-breaker 1-0 thanks to a goal from Janelle Evans on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 6-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 while Quinnipiac saw its record go to 12-1-1 and 4-1-1. Clarkson next plays a midweek game against St. Lawrence on Wednesday morning at Cheel Arena.

Despite no goals scored in regulation or in the five-minute overtime session, opportunities were available for both teams throughout the contest. However, it turned out that a series of skating starts and stops by Janelle Evans was enough for the Knights in the shootout session, as she finished on the right side following a deke on the left that kept Felicia Frank out of position.

In the first period, the best chance in the early going came from Keira Hurry about five minutes into the game. Hurry tried a wrap around from the left side to the right only to be denied and the puck stayed in the zone for another chance from Hurry, but her second shot rang off the post to keep the game scoreless. Six minutes later Sena Catterall and Janelle Evans nearly connected on a 2-on-1 for the Knights, but Quinnipiac goalie Felicia Frank stuffed the attempt on the doorstep.

The Bobcats best chance of the first period came off the stick of Emerson Jarvis, as she collected the puck in the slot on a 3-on-2 only to be stoned by Holly Gruber with roughly 90 seconds to go. The ensuing rebound also bounced around near the crease before the whistle was blown to end the threat.

After watching Clarkson hold an 11-5 lead in shots on goal in the first period, Quinnipiac had a lopsided run in the second. The first solid chance of middle period came again from Jarvis as she tried to go low glove side against Gruber, and one more shot at a sharp angle from the bottom of the right circle was smothered by Gruber to force the whistle.

Near the middle of the second, Quinnipiac enjoyed an extended stretch in its offensive zone thanks to a 6-on-5 and a delayed penalty. The Bobcats threw many shots around the cage only to come up empty, as did the power play chance that immediately followed, marking the end to of an impressive defensive stretch by the Golden Knights.

Each team had chances in the third while on the power play, though none of those chances came until the second half of the final period. Quinnipiac went on the power play with about nine minutes to go and quickly got a high shot off that was stopped by xxxx. However, that was the only chance for the Bobcats that went on net and Clarkson evened things out with a short-handed bid by Madison Chantler similarly denied.

Clarkson began its first power play of the third with an offensive zone draw and only 3:30 left on the clock. The Knights kept the puck in the zone for a full minute, but none of the shots challenged the Quinnipiac defense. The Green and Gold then ended regulation on the power play with hopes of staying out of an overtime session, getting two shots on goal in the final 10 seconds, one from Megan McKay at the top of the left circle and another from McKay at the top of the slot.

The Knights began the overtime period with 20 seconds worth of power play, but came up empty without any legitimate scoring chances. For about a minute the two teams skated 4-on-4 (with the conclusion of the penalty) before dropping back to 3-on-3 for the final 3:44. Although the teams had chances in overtime, most of the extra session was spent looking to set up opportunities rather than taking them. With about 30 seconds to go, Tessa Holk was denied on a 2-on-1, as again Gruber collected the puck without allowing a rebound. Following a timeout, Clarkson held the possession in its offensive end and Keira Hurry almost ended things on a high for the Knights after a steal and walk-in on the left side, but Felicia Frank was able to match Gruber's late save.

Quinnipiac ended with a 36-32 edge in shots on goal, giving Clarkson's Gruber 36 saves in the contest and Frank 32 stops for the Bobcats. The two teams drew even on faceoffs at 28-28 and combined to go 0-for-5 on the power play.
