Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Knights Rally Late in Third to Claim 1-1 Tie at SLU

Canton, NY – Rhea Hicks scored with just four minutes remaining in the third period to help the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team rally for a 1-1 tie against rival St. Lawrence University in a non-league contest at Appleton Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked 10th in the most recent national poll, saw their record go to 10-6-2 overall while St. Lawrence moved to 7-11-2. The two teams will return to action against one another on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena, this time in a return to ECAC Hockey play instead of a non-conference game.

Although the game was a non-league event with no ECAC points up for grabs, the two teams went to a shootout after overtime provided no winner. Sara Manness scored on Clarkson's second attempt and Arianne Leblanc made a stop on the other end to give the Knights the 1-0 shootout win.

In the opening minute of regulation, the Golden Knights nearly got on the board when Sara Manness took a shot from the left circle and rung one off the post, but that was really as close as Clarkson would come to a goal in the period despite some solid chances. Both teams went on the power play twice, though the first was abbreviated for each squad as a whistle shortly after the first penalty's faceoff put the squads skating 4-on-4.

St. Lawrence took advantage of its second power play of the opening period, scoring late in its opportunity. The puck was swung out from the left side boards and Alexia Cote and Hayden Summers went D-to-D, with the puck coming back to Cote for a wrist shot that just snuck through traffic and past Arianne Leblanc. The shot from above the left circle found the back of the net with only 20 seconds left on the power play, making it 1-0 at 12:28.

The ice definitely seemed tilted in Clarkson's favor in the second period, as the Knights spent a lot of time in the SLU defensive zone either with possession or on a forecheck. Helping matters for Clarkson were three infractions against the Saints, and the Knights sent six on shots on goal during those power plays, but none challenged Kassidy Lawrence too much, and the score remained 1-0 through the first 40 minutes of play.

At the start of the third, Sara Manness had another golden opportunity to tie the game when Clarkson found itself in a quick 2-on-1 in the SLU defensive zone, but the shot from Manness from the bottom of the right circle was denied on a sliding save by Lawrence, maintaining the Saints' one goal lead. Ten minutes later, Lara Beecher had a stride on a SLU defender and tried to use her backhand to beat Lawrence, but that shot, too was stuffed by Lawrence.

The continuous pressure by the Knights in the third period finally paid off as the Green and Gold tied the game with just four minutes to go in the contest. An attempt by Megan McKay from the left point was blocked before it could make it on net, but Sena Catterall was there to collect the puck. Although her shot in the slot was well wide, it took a perfect bounce off the boards to Rhea Hicks on the opposite side of the crease, and Hicks knocked the puck in to knot the game up at 1-1 late in the stanza.

In overtime, the two teams went back and forth with nearly four minutes of uninterrupted play and each had chances, but the best came in the waning ticks of the period. Sena Catterall brought the puck into the SLU zone on a breakaway with just five seconds left using several moves to try and confuse Lawrence. The SLU goalie did just about the only thing she could, doing a full split at the last second to block any low shot, and the strategy worked as she made the denial with just two seconds left on the clock.

Clarkson won the battle of shots (71-53) and shots on goal (37-24), an impressive feat after trailing in both in the opening frame. Following the first period, Clarkson had a 29-13 edge in shots on goal for the final 45 minutes of the contest. Kassidy Lawrence made 36 stops for the Saints and Arianne Leblanc ended with 23 stops.
