Knights Come Back Again for 4-3 Overtime Win Over SLU

Potsdam, NY – Sara Manness capped off an exciting overtime period with a goal at 2:57 in the extra session to help lift the 10th-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to another come-from-behind win, downing St. Lawrence University 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-6-2 overall and 6-2-1 in ECAC Hockey, while the Saints fell to 7-12-2 and 4-5-0. Clarkson is now off until the calendar turns to 2026, when the Knights will host Saint Michael's the first weekend of the New Year.

After some impressive stops by the SLU defense in overtime, Manness scored the game-winner after two drop passes from Manon le Scodan and Megan McKay. Manness skated in from the right circle through the slot with SLU's Brooke Mulvihill on her back and then scored with a shot over the stick of Kassidy Lawrence.

The opening of the contest was highlighted by a flurry of penalties. St. Lawrence was whistled for a number of early infractions, creating a 5-on-3 as well as the ire of Saints' head coach Chris Wells, who received a bench minor to put four Saints in the box at once. An extended 5-on-3 did not give Clarkson any goals, though, as the best chance from Manon le Scodan hit a post and Sara Manness's one-timer from the right circle was stopped by Kassidy Lawrence. Once the teams went back to 5-on-4, Clarkson continued to put on pressure with more chances, including a shot from Kate Manness that rung off the far post and bounced down in front of the crease. Fortunately for the Knights, Sena Catterall was there to flip in the backhand before Lawrence could recover, putting Clarkson up 1-0 at 10:36.

Over the final 10 minutes, Clarkson started to even things up in terms of penalties, killing off a holding infraction with a little over three minutes to go in the period. That power play for the Saints, however, did nearly get see the game tied when Lilien Benakova had an open left side of the net available only to be denied by the skate and pad of Arianne Leblanc on a sliding stop. Clarkson then killed off 70 seconds of another penalty before the buzzer sounded to end the period.

In the second period, the Knights appeared to be ready to go on the power play only to be whistled shortly thereafter while trying to collect themselves on the delayed penalty, creating a 4-on-4. Both teams had chances with more open ice, but it was the Saints that would tie the game shortly after the teams were back to even. After a brief time in the Clarkson zone, Cheyenne Degeer sent a centering pass into the slot for Rylan Haslam, who tipped the puck past Leblanc for the Saints first goal at 6:23.

Barely 90 seconds later a quick transition through the neutral zone gave St. Lawrence its first lead of the contest. This score was all Meghan Crowley, as she blasted a shot from the top of the right circle over the glove side shoulder of Leblanc, just underneath the crossbar, at 7:58. St. Lawrence continued to run its offense efficiently five minutes later when Haslam took a sharp angle shot from the bottom of the right circle, going to the far post while on the power play to make it 3-1 at 13:02.

Though the momentum appeared to be on the side of the Saints, Clarkson tipped it back in its favor two minutes after falling behind by two goals. Rhea Hicks won a faceoff in the SLU zone and two quick passes found Jaela Carter at the point and her attempted went through traffic without a redirection to make it 3-2 at 15:17, marking her first goal as a Golden Knight.

Clarkson tied the game up 3-3 midway through the third period, scoring its second power-play goal of the contest. The puck worked around the top of the zone while Sara Manness set herself up for a one-timer near the right dot. She would fire a shot on goal that was stopped by Kassidy Lawrence, but the rebound bounced off a Saints defender and into the back of the net, providing the game-tying goal at 8:47 in the third.

About 90 seconds into the overtime, Clarkson found itself with a 2-0 just over the blue line, but Kassidy Lawrence read the cross slot feed and slid through the crease for the denial. A minute later Lawrence was called upon again when the Knights were on a 2-on-1 as Lara Beecher's attempt from the slot was stopped. Eventually, Sara Manness was able to end the game with her overtime heroics.

Arianne Leblanc made 13 saves through the first 33 minutes and Holly Gruber stopped 14 more shots over the final 30 minutes for the Knights, while Kassidy Lawrence finished with 29 saves for St. Lawrence. Clarkson won the battle on faceoffs 44-24.
