Playing in perhaps the most competitive conference in Division III Men's Lacrosse, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team will be looking to make some noise in the Liberty League once again as the Golden Knights open up the 2025 season this weekend with a neutral site game against Muhlenberg College.

Guided by long-time head coach Bill Bergan, Clarkson made it into the Liberty League Tournament for the second straight year but was eliminated in the opening round by a top-20 team. In 2023, Clarkson fell to St. Lawrence by a goal and last season the Knights were a few goals short versus Union College, with both teams ranked among the best teams in Division III. That will be a regular part of the schedule again in 2025 since four of the Liberty League's eight teams are ranked in the top 20 in the preseason polls, including three in the top 10.

The top feature of this version of the Green and Gold is depth and experience on defense. Graduate student Matt Szwagulinski was named a USILA All-American for the second straight season and is one of the top defenders in the conference, ranking among the Liberty League leaders in caused turnovers the past few seasons. Szwagulinski, along with seniors Gavin Cheney and Tyler Griffin, juniors Jack Garvey and Joe Porto, as well as sophomores Dylan Coan and Steve Getsie, create a remarkable defense that should create fits for opposing offenses. A year ago, Griffin Emerson and Eric Gellasch split goalkeeping duties and helped limit the opposition to 10.62 goals per game.

Like the defense, the midfield has plenty of returners, especially on offense. Graduate student Andrew Kearney ranked second on the team in scoring a year ago with 45 points on 35 goals and 10 assists and he is knocking on the door of the 100-point club for the Golden Knights. Senior Alex Seiler is second among returning players in scoring, as he notched 20 points a year ago with 14 goals and six assists, while sophomore Mario Streiff had some solid numbers in his first collegiate season with 16 points on six goals and 10 assists as well. As usual, much of the midfield produces in other ways as well, and it will be bolstered by graduate student Chris Albrecht and senior Logan Wilkinson. The latter serves as a faceoff player who also sticks on the field for offense and defense, while the former was a regular sight on both sides of the ball, too.

Offensively, the Golden Knights do return a number of players who contributed in the past few years, but Coach Bergan and staff will be leaning on the returners for more output this season. Clarkson graduated four of its top five scorers a year ago in Matt Reilly (50 points), Sebastian Geiger (41 points), Thomas Fiebich (25 points), and Tyler Hall (21 points), with the first three names all 100-point scorers for their careers. This season, Clarkson will like see Connor Matthews, Connor Holly, Sam Mancabelli, Joe Kelly, and Vincent Lavarnway shouldering a larger scoring load, though each of those players have spent plenty of time on the turf over the years. Don't be surprised to see Robert Fox, Parker Leary, and Jack Burns gain larger rolls.
