Box Score
Madison, WI – Two goals in the first six minutes proved all the difference for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, as the Golden Knights advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Boston University on Thursday night at LaBahn Arena on the campus of University of Wisconsin.

Post Game Press Event

With the win the Knights improved to 25-12-2 on the season, the 10th time in program history that the team has reached 25 wins in a season. The Terriers run of come-from-behind wins in the post season came to an end, with their season concluding at 24-12-2. Clarkson advances to next round of the NCAA Tournament where it will face top-seeded Wisconsin. That game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm Central time on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson dominated the opening period beyond its 30-7 lead in shots (13-3 in shots on goal). The Green and Gold's forecheck kept Boston University from connecting many passes to get any kind of offense going, while also forcing the Terriers into numerous turnovers in both their own defensive end and in the neutral zone, allowing Clarkson to extend Boston's shifts and keep them skating backwards in a defensive posture.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard just five minutes into the game as the Knights took their time to set up a rush with patience in their own defensive zone. Eventually one pass from behind the net went to Anne Cherkowski at the left circle, and the graduate student did the rest, skating up ice through the neutral zone and eluding a couple of defenders with some fancy stick play. That was all it took to create space as Cherkowski whistled a shot from the right circle's dot to the opposite post, going top shelf over the right shoulder of Callie Shanahan at 5:09.

Only 15 seconds later, Boston University was called for a body check to put the Knights on the power play. It was strength against strength as Clarkson's power play entered the game ranked second in the nation and Boston University's penalty kill was second nationally as well, but it took only 16 seconds for the Knights to find the back of the net. Clarkson possessed the puck around the perimeter before going to work on the right side. Cherkowski sent a puck from the top of the right circle down to Sena Catterall right in front of the crease. Gaining the attention of Shanahan and another Boston defender, Catterall dropped a no-look backhand pass through the slot to Rhea Hicks who easily slapped the puck into a wide open net at 5:40, giving Clarkson a 2-0 advantage.

The second period was a relatively quiet one for both teams, though the Terriers were able to get a little closer in the shot department with an 8-4 advantage. A couple of scrum chances occurred for both teams in the stanza, but the best scoring opportunity that actually resulted in a save came about two minutes in when Alex Law skated in on the left side but was denied by Holly Gruber. Boston University got a power play chance in the middle of the period, but could muster just three total shots in that time with two tossed aside by Gruber. The final two minutes of the period, the Terriers challenged Gruber three more times, but the Clarkson netminder was up to task to keep the score 2-0.

A pair of penalties in the first eight minutes came up empty for the Knights, though Clarkson certainly had some chances for a third goal. Callie Shanahan made a couple of excellent saves, including a sprawling blocker save that had Jenna Goodwin shaking her head in disappointment. Shortly after the end of the second power play of the period for the Knights, Boston had its chance to go up a skater, but Clarkson's penalty kill was busy blocking shots. During the two-minute stretch, only one of the six Terrier attempts got through to Holly Gruber, which was denied.

With a little over four minutes to go in the third period, Boston University decided to pull its goalie once it had possession in the Clarkson defensive zone. It didn't take long to score with the extra attacker, as a second attempt from Lindsay Bochna on the doorstep slipped past Holly Gruber, getting the Terriers back into the game with 4:01 remaining.

With a little over two minutes remaining, the Terriers chose to empty the net again in hopes of scoring the equalizer, but Clarkson wouldn't let Boston put together much on offense. In the final minute, Sena Catterall put the game away, gaining possession in the neutral zone and flipping the puck between two Terriers and into the vacated net for the vital insurance goal.

Clarkson finished the game with a 62-41 edge in total shots and a similar percentage in shots on goal at 30-18. The Knights went 1-for-4 on the power play and held Boston without a goal in its two chances. Gruber ended the game with 17 saves for the Knights and Shanahan had 27 stops for the Terriers.
