Goal in Second Overtime for Vassar Puts Knights on Losing End for First Time in 2025

Potsdam, NY – It took two overtimes for the Liberty League opener to be determined, but the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team ended up on the short side of a 15-14 decision against Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 4-1 overall while Vassar stayed unbeaten at 6-0. Clarkson flies out to Florida Sunday, and has two games scheduled in the Sunshine State next week.

Vassar's game-winning goal came in the final minute of the second overtime as Amelia Poirier found Emilia DiLiberto about five yards out of the goal on the right side, and DiLiberto shot high to elude the stick of Clarkson's Riley Donovan with 52 seconds left on the clock.

Although the score was close at the end, the two teams traded significant runs of offense. With the score tied 3-3 after the first period, Clarkson rattled off five straight in the second quarter to make the score 8-3, including a trio of goals from Brooklynne Perrigo. Just when it appeared as if the Knights might run away with the game, Vassar responded over the final five minutes of the second period, scoring five goals to tie the game, including one from Sigrid Fredlund with only 32 seconds left.

Vassar's run was not stopped by the intermission, as the Brewers tacked on four more goals in their 9-0 run at the beginning of the third period, putting the tally at 12-8 when Elizabeth Burgess scored at the 6:20 mark. Kaitlyn McNamara finally broke the streak for the Brewers at 5:42 and the Knights got back within two by the end of the period.

In the fourth, Vassar scored just once near the midway point when Burgess connected with Reilly Mulcahy at 8:48. However, the Knights would not go away, getting two key goals only 43 seconds apart when Bella Perrigo and Madelynn Barnum scored with a little over four minutes to go. At 3:05, Brooklynne Perrigo tied the game with an unassisted goal, but the final three minutes of the game saw neither team get a shot off, sending the contest to overtime.

In the extra sessions, both teams valued possession more than usual, setting themselves up for the perfect opportunities. It wasn't until late in the second overtime when DiLiberto was able to score near the top of the net that the game would conclude.

Clarkson finished with a 38-28 edge in shots and a 28-22 lead in shots on goal. Brooklynne Perrigo had five points on four goals and an assist and Gabby Cranfield matched her point total on three goals and two assists. Sydney Nakas had eight draws and Rylee Ganter caused three turnovers. Jennaca McGill had four saves in 32:27 and Riley Donovan had three stops in 32:41 of play.

For Vassar, Elizabeth Burgess led all scorers with six points on five goals and an assist and Amelia Poirier produced four points thanks to two goals and two assists. Both DiLiberto and Fredlund had three goals. Bree MacMullen made 14 stops in 65-plus minutes.
