CU Softball Preview - at Ithaca/Union (4/18-19)

Looking to continue its recent winning run, the Clarkson University Softball team is on the road this weekend for four key Liberty League contests when the team takes on Ithaca College on Friday and Union College on Saturday.

The Series: Clarkson has won just once in 15 tries against the Bombers, a 3-0 shutout back in the 2021 season, though two of the last four defeats were by just a single run. Union and Clarkson split in 2022, the Garnet Chargers won all three games in 2023 which also included a Liberty League playoff play-in game, and Clarkson swept Union back in 2022.

Key Stats for Clarkson (16-11, 4-2 Liberty League): A number of bats have heated up recently, but none more so than catcher Zoey Kovach. The two-time Liberty League All-Star and senior broke out recently with three consecutive multi-hit games, going 7-for-11 (.636) in that stretch with four doubles. Kovach is one of five regulars hitting better than .325, as Lexi Rydelek (.426), Devin Fitzpatrick (.333.), Kovach (.329), Elissa Uveino (.329), and Isabel Haspil (.329) are all above the mark. Fitzpatrick has also been solid in the pitching circle, lowering her earned run average to 1.64.

Key Stats for Ithaca (17-4, 5-1 Liberty League): No team in the conference can match the 1-2 punch of pitchers that the Bombers can roll out. Anna Cornell has a 0.84 earned run average, a 0.77 WHIP, and is allowing hitters just a .155 batting average thanks to 109 strikeouts in 66.1 innings. She has struck out double figures in four of her last five outings, and the only reason she fell short of that number in the other appearance was that she was limited to three innings with eight strikeouts. Mady Rowell also owns a 1.14 earned run average and is allowing opponents to bat .223 in 49.1 innings. Cornell and Rowell have combined for all of the innings for Ithaca this year, save for 14.2 thrown by others on the staff.

Key Stats for Union (5-13, 2-4 Liberty League): When the Garnet Chargers had Karson Saunders on the roster, the team could say it boasted an outstanding offense due to the one-player wrecking crew that Saunders most often was, but this year Union is struggling at the plate to the tune of a .232/.296/.288 slash line with only two home runs. Kyla Springer stands out for Union with a .390/.419/.488 line while Elizabeth Werner is hitting .355/.417/.484 in 36 plate appearances. Carra Cleaves is holding up the pitching staff's numbers with a 2.78 earned run average and 51 strikeouts in 58 innings, but overall, the Garnet Chargers' pitchers are allowing opponents to hit .365/.424/.460.
