Burns Records 20 Kills in Knights Four-Set Loss at Ithaca

Ithaca, NY – Conley Burns was busy with a 20-kill, 12-dig effort, but the Clarkson University Volleyball team could not complete its comeback attempt as Ithaca College outlasted the Golden Knights 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-8 on the season, while the nationally-ranked Bombers improved to 10-3. Clarkson will be back at home next weekend, taking on crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam on Friday evening.

The first set saw the two teams close in the opening moments, but Ithaca went on a 4-1 run to gain a five-point lead near the midway point of the initial game. That advantage swelled to eight and points later, and though Clarkson kept the margin within single digits, the team was unable to sustain offense to cut the deficit further.

Although the second set still saw the Knights making a few unforced errors, the defense picked up after falling behind by seven (12-5) in the early going. Clarkson crawled back to within one at 17-16 after an attack error, and trailed by just two a few moments later (21-19). However, a kill, and ace, and two solo blocks were enough for the Bombers to pull away late for a five-point win.

Clarkson took advantage of a strong service game in the third set to overcome the Bombers and avoid the sweep. The Knights had just six kills in the third set, but took advantage of Ithaca mistakes to claim the win. The Bombers had eight unforced errors on attack, five service errors, and five reception errors on Clarkson aces. The Green and Gold nearly led wire-to-wire in the set, opening with a 5-0 lead until Ithaca came back to tie at 13-13. Ithaca twice took brief leads (17-16, 21-20), but each time the Knights had a response. An ace from Alyciana Alvira put the Knights back up 22-21, and a few points later Clarkson picked up the win thanks to a kill from Conley Burns.

Ithaca opened the fourth set with eight of the first 10 points, but the Knights rallied to get back within one on two occasions (12-11, 14-13). Clarkson was unable to complete the bid as Ithaca always had timely answers to the brief scoring streaks by the Knights. Clarkson was within two late (21-19 following back-to-back kills from Marin Hangliter and Conley Burns, only to see Ithaca score the next three points on a pair of kills and an ace. Though Clarkson took the next two, the Bombers ended the set and match with a kill from Addison Leadbetter.

Conley Burns notched 20 kills and 12 digs to lead Clarkson's offense, with Marin Hangliter next contributing six kills and four aces. Ashley Currier claimed 26 assists and three block assists, while Olivia Baxter had 27 digs, including 26 in the last three sets.

For Ithaca, Naomi Clauhs posted 20 kills and Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu added 15 kills. Wesley Slavin ran the offense with 43 assists and Ellie Benedict topped the team with 24 digs.
