BARCOMB HOMERS, KNIGHTS WIN FIRST IN FLORIDA March 15, 2004
Fort Myers, FL - Junior shortstop Brandon Barcomb (Cadyville, NY) went 2-for-4 and hit a long home run to help lead the Clarkson University Baseball team to its first win over Florida, defeating Augsburg 4-2 Monday morning at George Brett Field in the Gene Cusic Classic.
The Golden Knights improve to 1-4 overall and face Knox College at 4:00 pm on Monday afternoon.
Clarkson broke out of a four-game hitting slump by posting eight hits through the first five innings, including two from Barcomb and two more from junior outfielder Mike Onisk (Baldwinsville, NY). Senior Chad Sydor (Troy, NY) and J.J. Lorence (Liverpool, NY) also produced hits, extending modest hitting streaks to four games.
Freshman David Potter (Crown Point, NY) earned the victory, allowing just four hits over five innings with five strikeouts, leaving the game with a 4-1 lead. The Golden Knights posted three runs in the third inning when Sydor left off with a single. After Lorence was retired, Barcomb followed with a single and John Smith (Hermon, NY) singled in Sydor. Giovan Scialdone (Colonie, NY) followed with a fielder's choice which scored Barcomb from third base. After a walk to Onisk, freshman Gerald Stothers (Malta, NY) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Barcomb hit a one-out solo home run in the fifth inning, a solid drive that flew nearly 400 feet to right field.
Evan Weaver (Lafayette, NY) pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Smith earned his first save of the year for the Knights with a two-strikeout seventh.
