KNIGHTS BATS PRODUCE 21 HITS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF AURORA March 19, 2004
Fort Myers, FL – Juniors Dan Hojnacki (Attica, NY) and Andy Noonan (Central Square, NY) each tossed complete game victories as the Clarkson University Baseball team swept national power Aurora College in a doubleheader, beating the Spartans 6-3 and 7-3 Friday afternoon at George Brett Field in the Gene Cusic Classic.
The Golden Knights improved to 5-6 on the season and have won five of their last seven games. Clarkson closes the trip with a 9-inning game against UMass-Boston on Saturday and a 7-inning game against the University of St. Thomas on Sunday.
Clarkson broke out of a season-long offensive slump by pounding out 21 hits and scoring 13 runs in the doubleheader sweep. Junior shortstop Brandon Barcomb (Cadyville, NY) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and senior outfielder Chad Sydor (Troy, NY) was 2-for-4. Both players scored two times. Junior outfielder John Smith (Hermon, NY) also went 3-for-3 with a run scored, extending his streak to six straight at bats with a hit. Smith also drove in two runs.
Hojnacki allowed just five hits over seven innings, striking out four. The junior righthander improved to 1-1 on the season with an ERA of 2.08.
In the second game, J.J. Lorence (Liverpool, NY), who had an eight-game hitting streak snapped in the opener, drove in Sydor in the first inning to put the Knights on top early. Lorence went 2-for-4 in the game, while Sydor was 3-for-4 with a double and a sacrifice fly. Freshman Zach Richardson (Parishville, NY) also went 2-for-2, driving in two runs with a single in the fifth inning. Smith had a streak of nine straight plate appearances in which he reached base snapped ind the second game.
Noonan scattered nine hits over seven innings to improve to 1-1 on the year. He struck out eight batters and walked only one.
