Knights Take Third at Skidmore Tournament October 20, 2007
Saratoga Springs, NY - Last season certainly has proven to be an aberration in the recent Clarkson University Volleyball history as the Golden Knights won two matches on Saturday to return to the 20-win plateau with a third-place finish in the Skidmore Tournament.
The Golden Knights, who moved to 20-12 on the season, defeated Ramapo in three games, 30-15, 30-23, 30-20 and then beat St. Lawrence in four, 30-12, 30-20, 31-33, 30-17. Clarkson now waits to see if it will be selected to the prestigious New York State Tournament to be held next weekend at NYU.
Junior Stacy Storms (Marcy, NY) enjoyed an incredible weekend for the Knights, earning All-Tournament honors for her performance. Against Ramapo, she had eight kills for a .615 hitting percentage, and then went for 10 kills and a .421 hitting percentage against St. Lawrence.
"I was very happy with how well we played right from the start (on Saturday)," said head coach Johan Dulfer. "It seems like we are learning how to play two strong days at a tournament and not just one. I need to give my team a big compliment for playing such good volleyball on two consecutive days with so little rest. We will be ready for our two tournaments coming up."
The Knights dominated against Ramapo as the team's two setters combined for 10 aces. Jenna Stock (Johnstown, NY) had four aces to go along with 18 assists and seven kills, and Amanda Rankin (Horseheads, NY) contributed 19 assists and six aces. Katie Fenner (Lansing, NY) led the team with 11 kills and Jessica Agnew (Queensbury, NY) produced a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Alison Schroeder (Webster, NY) also added 14 digs.
Against the Saints, Agnew had 22 kills for a .373 hitting percentage and added 18 digs. Several other Clarkson players produced solid statistics as well. Jenna Stock had 27 assists and seven kills, Amanda Rankin had 23 assists and 17 digs, and Alison Schroeder dug 23 balls.
"Its very hard to beat a team three times, especially one as well coached and proud as St. Lawrence," coach Dulfer explained. "With the exception of game three, where we struggled passing for a while, I thought we played very disciplined and with a lot of heart. It helps that we were relentless from the service line as well.
