2011-12 Clarkson Women's Basketball Preview

Following the graduation of its most recent All-American in 2003, the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball program took an expected drop in victories. However, that drop off became a cavern that the Golden Knights have been, as yet, unable to climb out of in the past few seasons. With a renewed energy from second-year head coach John Hampton and a strong freshman class, coupled with some outstanding veterans, the Golden Knights may finally have started to build the program back to the level of its glorified past.

Hampton, along with assistant coach Emily Cummings, hit the recruiting roads hard last year to supplement the talent already on the roster with a strong incoming freshman class. Though Clarkson has only five returning players on the roster from last season, the Golden Knights are enthusiastic about the coming campaign and fully expect to improve upon last year’s record of 5-19. Though the team struggled in conference play, registering just two wins, the Knights showed they could hang with the top teams, beating eventual NCAA Tournament participant Vassar College as one of their two league victories.

Leading the way for Clarkson in 2011-12 is a pair of seniors with solid resumes at Clarkson. Senior forward Chrissy Scanlon (Queensbury, NY) was Clarkson’s lone all-star in 2010-11, gaining Liberty League Honorable Mention All-Star status as a junior last year. Scanlon averaged 10.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, shooting 44.9% from the field overall, which ranked fifth in the conference. Scanlon provided a solid inside presence that never really took a night off, something that she will need to continue to do in her final collegiate season.

Classmate Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) has been a tantalizing talent since she arrived on campus three years ago, but injuries have curtailed her career in each season. Still, Turner has averaged better than 10 points per game over the course of 63 games, and has also averaged more than five rebounds per contest. A healthy season for Turner could get her back on track to scoring over 900 career points, with 1,000 a possibility as well.

Junior Noelle Miller (Hamburg, NY) brings an unexpected strength in the post that belies her size, as she averaged 5.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game as a guard and forward. Miller’s tenacity on the interior keeps many plays alive and she never shies away from contact. Junior Jazmyn Haywood (Rochester, NY) and Marissa Pelosi (Medfield, MA) both were in their first collegiate seasons last year and saw limited action, and unfortunately the two been slowed by injuries this pre-season. Once healthy, however, the duo should see more time on the court.

With so few players returning this season, it was imperative that the Knights get good numbers in the Class of 2015. Not only is there quantity in the freshman class, there is plenty of quality in the six newcomers to Clarkson.

The frosh class has plenty of size as Brooke Butkovsky (Monroe, CT), Taliah Pounds (Watervliet, NY) and Ashley Jones (Jeffersonville, VT) each stand at 5-10 or taller, which will be a considerable help for Scanlon in the post this season. Raeanne Clabeaux (New Woodstock, NY) is a 5-9 guard with skills reminiscent of the recently graduated Lauren Pluchino, who was on track to being a conference all-star last season before injuries interrupted her season. Jovanna Snead (Poughkeepsie, NY), another guard, was a key member of a team that reached the post-season every year of her four-year career in high school, and Leighann Tomita (Cerritos, CA) is a talented point guard with ample athleticism and court awareness that should lead to numerous tallies in the assists column.
