Game Story -Â Though Calvin dominated the first and final sets, New Paltz certainly put a scare in the top-ranked team in the country. Trailing 13-10 in the second set, New Paltz scored five of the next six points, the last coming on an ace by Maddie Zwickl to force a timeout by the Knights. New Paltz would lose its edge, but scored the last two points on kills from Alli Coleman and Alex Bizub to close out the set 25-23.
In the third set, the teams teetered back and forth with Calvin finally picking up a two-point lead at 17-15 to force a timeout for New Paltz. Though the Hawks would trail by only two a few points later (20-18), Calvin won five of the final six points to begin a dominant run that finished off the match in the next set.
Maggie Kamp led Calvin with 14 kills, but it was Emily Crowe that was the most dominant for the Knights with 13 kills and just one error in 19 swings (.632 hitting percentage). Game Story - Â As anyone on campus would have expected, the Alumni Gymnasium was packed for the Golden Knights match up against top-ranked Calvin College. Clarkson came away with a first set win as the two teams rocked back and forth with momentum, but midway through the sets, the Knights came from three points down to claim the lead. Calvin, down by three at 21-18, scored two straight but Victoria Kirkemo (Englewood, CO) ended the run with a back-row kill that just stayed inside the line. From that point on, Clarkson was helped out in the waning points as Calvin had three straight service errors to give the Golden Knights the set 25-23.
In the second set, Calvin began to not only assert itself offensively, but kept the Golden Knights from scoring on offense by tipping many of their attempts and creating easier digs for the back row. After a kill from Kirkemo tied the set at 11-11, Calvin rattled off six straight points, forcing Clarkson to use both of its timeouts. The strategy worked briefly as Clarkson scored four of the next five, including kills from Sierra Rhoades (Poway, CA), Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO), and Kirstie Shurie (LaCanada, CA), and the lead narrowed to three, but a reversal on one call swung the game from a three-point deficit to a five-point deficit late in the match (20-15, Calvin) and the Knights from Michigan held on for the set win.
The third set saw Clarkson jump out to a significant lead in the early going, but the advantage evaporated quickly as the set was tied at 11-11. Calvin gained a two-point edge at 21-19, forcing Clarkson to take a timeout, but the Knights finished off the set strong with solid play from the middle and a continued defensive effort that has become typical of Clarkson in the past few seasons.
In the fourth set, Calvin jumped out to an eight-point lead (11-3) and Clarkson closed the gap to four, but overall the Knights were able to control the set. Despite a timeout to stop the momentum, Calvin scored 10 of the final 13 points for a double-digit win.
As expected, the final set went back and forth in the opening points. Katrina Lane (Seattle, WA) recorded her third kill of the set at the break to give Clarkson an 8-7 edge, but Calvin scored the next four points to take the lead. Though Clarkson would cut it back to two (12-10), Maggie Kamp pounded the final two kills to close out the set.Â

Box ScoreGame Story - Â The final match of the evening was full of comebacks, as every set except for the third saw one team trailing by a few points in the early going only to recover to end up taking the set. That was never more apprarent than in the final two sets, as Roger Williams appeared to have the match finished off with a small lead late that had it staring down just three more points for conclusion. However, New Paltz rallied to push the set into extra time and took the final two to create a fifth game. New Paltz used that momentum in the early going and had a four-point lead (8-4) at the break, but Roger Williams rallied back to again be ready to finish the day. But the Hawks of New York were able to fly past the Hawks of Rhode Island and gain the long-awaited win in the waning hours of Friday.
Becca Borquist finished with a double-double (15 kills, 10 digs), as did Maddie Zwickl (39 assists, 15 digs) for New Paltz, and Katy Herbst contributed 14 digs and four aces. For Roger Williams, Elizabeth Flaherty had 13 kills, 17 digs, and 4 aces and Brittany McMullen finished with a team-best 15 kills. Nicole Webber and Josalyn Benson split time at setter, producing 32 and 17 assists, respectively, and Sarah McAniff added in 21 digs. Schedule - Saturday, August 30th9:00 am - #1 Calvin College vs. Simmons CollegeSet 1: Calvin 25, Simmons 14

Box Score
Game Story -Â Despite the early start, neither team was particularly groggy, especially Calvin, as the Knights finely tuned offense struck for a .375 hitting percentage in the match, including a .414 rate in the first set. Simmons had trouble with the Knights' size, but made some adjustments to make the third set a more interesting affair. Despite trailing in the early going, Simmons rallied all the way back to tie the set beyond the midway point, but Calvin was able to use its outsides effectively to finish off the match in three sets.

Box ScoreÂ
Game Story -Â In the first set, Roger Williams and Calvin matched each other kill for kill all the way until the 21-21 mark. However, the Knights capitalized on a couple of miscues by Roger Williams, including the set-ender that flew wide of the line to lift Calvin to a 25-22 set win.
In the second set, Calvin jumped out to a seven-point edge, but a rotational point provided Roger Williams with a little momentum and they climbed back to within two (12-10). Following a service error that made the score 17-14, the Knights got kills from Emily Crowe, Maggie Kamp and Laura Danhoff to extend their lead to six and the team cruised from that point to capture the set.
The final set of the match saw Calvin take a 11-8 lead and turn it into a double-digit victory as Emily Crowe sparked a late run with back-to-back kills to force a Roger Williams timeout. At set point, Roger Williams scored a pair to delay the inevitable, but down by 11 at that point the Hawks could not rally all the way back.
Laura Danhoff had a dominant match for Calvin, hitting .733 with 11 kills in 15 swings. Maggie Kamp produced a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs and Emily Crowe also hit .500 with seven kills and just one error in 12 attempts. Set 2: Clarkson 25, New Paltz 20
Set 3: Clarkson 25, New Paltz 17
Box ScoreGame Story -Â In the first set, New Paltz scored seven of the first 10 points of the match, but the Golden Knights recovered from a three-point deficit (9-6) and scored nine straight points to gain a six-point advantage (15-9). Though the Hawks stalled the run, Clarkson went on another 8-1 run to double up New Paltz and eventually settled for a 25-14 first-set victory.
In set two, the game was tied 6-6 when Clarkson took the lead for good, but the Hawks would not go away, fighting back to within a point at 11-10, and after being down by five, within three at 20-17. However, a diverse offense from Clarkson that saw six different players get a kill allowed the Knights to pull late before completing the 25-20 win.Â
The final set was tight until the midway point when New Paltz was forced to take a timeout at 13-10, which ended the run momentarily. After New Paltz scored one points, Clarkson rattled off five of the next six and later on scored five straight to push the advantage to nine. The Hawks produce a pair of points, but Victoria Kirkemo (Englewood, CO) finished off the match with a kill to give Clarkson the sweep.
Kirkemo finished with 11 kills and Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO) hit .500 (7-0-14) to lead Clarkson offensively. Kirstie Shurie (LaCanada, CA) had 32 assists and Evanne Jimenez (Ventura, CA) recorded 16 digs. Set 2: New Paltz 25, Simmons 19
Set 3: New Paltz 25, Simmons 18
Box ScoreGame Story - Coming off a three-set loss, New Paltz wasted little time getting back on track against Simmons College, utilizing a strong hitting regiment and taking advantage of Simmons’ miscues for a quick 25-10 win in the first set.
Though the Sharks would make it interesting in the next two sets, Simmons hit just .157 over the next two sets and though New Paltz wasn’t much better at .220 in the last two sets, the Hawks had 26 kills to outlast their opponents.
Becca Borquist had 12 kills and nine digs, while Maddie Zwickl tossed up 30 assists and Katy Herbst produced 13 digs for New Paltz. 5:00 pm - Roger Williams University vs. #20 Clarkson UniversitySet 1: Clarkson 25, Roger Williams 11
Set 2: Roger Williams 25, Clarkson 22
Set 3: Clarkson 25, Roger Williams 22
Set 4: Clarkson 28, Roger Williams 26
Box ScoreGame Story -Â In the final match of the day, the Golden Knights came out swinging with 16 kills in the first set, with all of them coming from three hitters, Victoria Kirkemo (6), Adrienne Walker (5) and Aishvina Arasu (5). Though the set was close in the early going, Clarkson used a couple of runs to quickly change the outlook, including a 10-1 run over the final 11 points, which ended on an Arasu crosscourt kill.
The second set saw the Knights’ hitting percentage drop as Roger Williams made some adjustments on defense and was able to put up a more difficult block. The Hawks also picked up their pace on offense and though Clarkson appeared read to rally back from a modest deficit late in the set, Roger Williams scored three of the final four points to hold off the Knights charge, 25-22.
In set number three, Clarkson’s offense continued to struggle, but down by five late (20-15), coach Dulfer made a switch that had three defensive specialists on the back line and just two offensive options up front. The change worked, as Clarkson scored six straight with a combination of aces, blocks, and kills as well as some errors by the Hawks. With a block and kill by Arasu, the Knights completed the comeback by tallying 10 of the final 12 points.
After trailing early on, Clarkson put on an impressive run midway through the fourth set that turned a two-point deficit into a six-point lead, thanks in large part to Adrienne Walker’s run from the service line. However, Roger Williams countered with six straight points of its own to tie the game back up. Clarkson pushed its advantage to two points late at 24-22, and the Knights appeared to have closed out the match, but a net violation and a hitting error forced extra time. The Knights actually trailed 26-25 after an error, but a Danielle Farabee kill put Clarkson back up and the Green and Gold held on for the four-set win.
Arasu finished with 20 kills, Kirkemo added 15, and Walker added 11 kills. Kirstie Shurie produced 50 assists in the four-set match and also tied for the team lead with 12 digs with Evanne Jimenez.
