COLGATE CUTS DOWN CLARKSON 2-1

November 28, 2003

Potsdam, NY – Though the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team certainly made strides against the established program of Colgate, the Golden Knights came up on the short end for the second time in less than three weeks against the Raiders, falling 2-1 Friday night at Clarkson’s Cheel Arena.

Caitlin Hornyak (Middletown, CT) scored the game-winning goal with less than seven minutes remaining in the third period as Colgate came away with two points, moving to 10-4-1 on the season. The Golden Knights fell to 5-5-2 overall.

Colgate and Clarkson played an uneventful first period that saw the Golden Knights out shoot the Raiders 8-6, a remarkable change from the first meeting between the two teams, which saw Clarkson trail 40-12 in shots on goal.

In the second period, the Golden Knights saw their shot advantage quickly diminish as Colgate took control of the game. The Raiders enjoyed a 10-2 shot advantage in the second stanza, but struggled to find a way to get a shot past Clarkson goaltender Kira McDonald (Pickering, ONT).

Clarkson finally ended the scoreless tie with 5:34 remaining in the second period. Lindsay Williams (Mississauga, ONT) skated past the blue line to the left circle and backhanded a shot over the right shoulder of Colgate goaltender Rebecca Lahar (Vienna, VA). The goal was Williams’ second of the season. Jill Nolan (Labrador, NF) picked up her team-leading fifth assist, and 10th point of the season, on the goal.

Colgate’s dominance in the second period would not end without a score, however, as the Raiders came back at the 17:08 mark to tie the game. Allison Paiano (Orleans, ONT) tied the game with her ninth goal of the season when she scored on a one-timer from Becky Irvine (Lakeview, NS). Maura Kehoe (Chelsea, QUE) was also awarded an assist.

Right after McDonald appeared to make what would be a game-saving sliding stop late in the third period, Colgate scored its second goal of the game as Hornyak flipped in a quick pass from Avery McGlenn (Coaldale, ALB) just in front of the crease at the 13:08, her first goal of the season. Kristy MacDonald (Cobourg, ONT) picked up an assist on the goal.

McDonald ended with 25 saves for Clarkson, while Lahar finished with 20 stops in goal for the Raiders. Colgate out shot Clarkson 27-21. The Raiders were 0-for-3 on the power play and the Golden Knights close the game 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.
